A 676-meter-long railway tunnel beneath Radimovice and the middle course of the Mohelka represent two different sides of the town. There are also structures with striking dimensions, seasonal traditions and a varied river landscape. Depending on your interests, you can tailor your stay to cultural history, nature or the dates of a festival.

Railway structures and historical landmarks

The railway tunnel beneath Radimovice lies on the line between Pardubice and Liberec. It was excavated from 1856 to 1858 and is 676 meters long. Another testament to railway construction is the Sychrovský Viaduct: it lies within the cadastral area of the municipality of Radimovice and rises 32 meters above the Mohelka Valley. It is 120 meters long and 11.5 meters wide. The two lengths can be compared directly: the tunnel is considerably longer than the viaduct; the viaduct’s width and height above the valley provide additional measurements.

Sandstone statues are also among the local cultural landmarks. The statues of Saint Lawrence, Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Florian date from the 18th and 19th centuries. The statue of Saint Barbara stands on a hill with views of Radimovice and the surrounding countryside. The state-owned Sychrov Chateau is located in the immediate vicinity of Radimovice. Vila Zelenka was built in its surroundings as the first recreation or holiday home; in the following years, it continued to serve this purpose.

Masopust and Sychrovská pouť

Masopust is the municipality’s largest cultural event and includes a masked parade. Visitors can take part in a competition for the best carnival doughnuts and sample traditional carnival specialties. As a recurring seasonal tradition, the festival is a good reason to plan around its date; dates should be checked each year.

Another tradition is the Sychrovská pouť. It has been mentioned since the 19th century and has been held on the first Sunday in September since 1920. Market stalls and fairground rides line Radimovice’s main street. While Masopust is associated with the parade and carnival specialties, stalls and fairground rides define the festival street during the pouť. Here too, it is advisable to check the dates and event program for the year you plan to visit.

The Mohelka, birds and beech stands

The middle course of the Mohelka forms a transition between a mountain river and a lowland river and is known as the “grayling zone.” Brown trout, grayling and bullhead are found in this stretch of the river. Kingfishers, grey wagtails and dippers are relatively common along the zone. More than 150 bird species have been recorded in Radimovice as a whole.

A body of water covering about two hectares below the summit of Hrobka is called “Světský rybník” on some maps. It has no inflow and is fed exclusively by rain and snowfall. Mallards, coots, the non-native Egyptian goose and reed warblers regularly nest at Světský rybník. Beech stands are also characteristic of the landscape around the Mohelka: relatively well-preserved stands grow on steep northern slopes above the river. In early spring, a spring aspect with flowering understory plants can be observed in remnants of beech stands on the steep slopes around the Mohelka.

These two possible nature-focused experiences also differ in timing: the spring aspect is tied to early spring, while the bird species described are characteristic of the river stretch and the body of water. If you would like to combine nature with a festival visit, you can take these seasons and changing event dates into account separately when planning your trip.

Planning your journey and stay

Sychrov station is about a 10- to 15-minute uphill walk from the center of Radimovice. This walking time is an approximate guide for planning locally. Several cycle routes pass through or near Radimovice. As routes and signage may change, it is advisable to check the current route information before setting out on a cycling trip.

Local attractions offer concrete pointers when choosing when to visit: a festival trip depends on the event date, while the spring aspect is tied to early spring. Railway structures, statues and the Mohelka complement these seasonal highlights with features of the area that can be enjoyed year-round. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip to Radimovice, you can consider these interests alongside the approximate walking time to the station and the latest information about cycle routes.
