Nativity scenes in a museum collection and as an outdoor installation, 14 bells, and a state-protected railway viaduct give Kryštofovo Údolí a distinctive cultural character. When choosing accommodation, you can consider which focus matters most to you: architectural history, nativity scene art, engineering structures, or an annual tradition. There are also practical details to help plan your journey: a public transport route and two railway stations on the Liberec–Česká Lípa line.

Church and Chapel of Saint Christopher

The present-day Church of Saint Christopher was built in 1683–1684 by carpenter Michl Schöbel from nearby Žibřidice, together with his helpers. The church grounds include a Baroque rectory, a mortuary and a bell tower. Regular guided tours for visitors are not held throughout the year; however, you can look inside through the glazed doors.

From the town centre, you can reach the Chapel of Saint Christopher via a green-marked hiking trail that climbs into the woods. The church and chapel offer different ways to experience the town’s religious buildings: the path to the chapel leads into the wooded area, while at the church you can look inside through the glazed doors.

Nativity Scene Art in the Museum and Town Centre

The Nativity Scene Museum displays more than 90 nativity scenes. Among the exhibits is a mechanical Tyrolean nativity scene, created by carpenter Franc Pohl around the turn of the 19th century. Jírův betlém, an outdoor nativity scene, has stood in the town centre since 1999. It is 16 metres long, and its figures are up to 3 metres high. The two displays also differ in age: the mechanical nativity scene was created around the turn of the 19th century, while Jírův betlém has stood in the town since 1999.

Bells and Railway Viaduct

Hodinová věž is housed in a former transformer station in the centre of Kryštofovo Údolí. The tower has 14 bells. Novinský Viaduct is 230 metres long, has 14 arches and is a state-protected technical monument. From Kryštofovo Údolí, you can reach the railway viaduct on foot via local paths and roads. The figures reflect two different aspects of engineering history: the tower’s bells and the viaduct’s length and arches.

Annual Festivals and Seasonal Activities

Údolský masopust is an annual masked and fancy-dress parade, accompanied by the Jizera folk ensemble. Údolská pouť takes place every year on the last weekend of July and has been celebrated, with a few interruptions, since 1862. If one of the festivals is the reason for your trip, check the exact event date before booking.

The children’s ski area has a ski school and a rental service for ski and snowboard equipment. As seasonal offerings may change, check the latest information before your trip.

Getting to Kryštofovo Údolí

Kryštofovo Údolí can be reached by public transport route 16, operated by Liberec City Transport. The railway stations Kryštofovo Údolí and Novina are on the Liberec–Česká Lípa line. Check the timetables for your travel dates, especially if you are combining your journey with an event.
