Sloup Castle, perched on its sandstone pillar, defines Sloup V Čechách’s connection with the rocks. This theme is complemented by trails with viewpoints, footbridges, and a forest pavilion, as well as cultural and historical details. Two questions are especially helpful when planning your stay: Which route suits you in terms of length and focus, and what visiting conditions should you bear in mind at the castle?
Rock Castle and Visit Planning
Sloup Castle is a 13th-century rock fortress perched on a sandstone pillar. Visiting requires a reasonable level of fitness, as you will need to tackle steep stairs carved into the rock. Take this into account when planning your visit and check the visiting conditions before you arrive. There is a paid car park at the castle; a bus stop is 400 m away.
Choose Routes by Length and Theme
The Sloupský vyhlídkový okruh is about 4 km long, marked with information boards, and equipped with benches. It passes the Emanuela-Maxa viewpoint, the Count’s Viewpoint, the Castle Viewpoint, and the Maximilian Viewpoint. This combines a clearly stated route length with several viewpoints.
The Naučná a interaktivní stezka ve Sloupu v Čechách has a different focus. It is 2 km long, has five stops, and is aimed primarily at parents with young children. The length comparison is simple: this educational trail is about half as long as the approximately 4 km scenic circular trail. The two routes also differ in their thematic focus and the stops mentioned. The Naučná a interaktivní stezka also includes the wooden “Vodní chrám” pavilion, which has a restored forest spring. The pavilion provides visitors with a place to rest and relax.
Walking Route to Cikánské údolí
The Cikánské údolí s jeskyněmi circular trail opened in 2005 and starts on Pod Stráží Street. The footpath follows the Dobranovský potok, crosses several footbridges, and leads into Cikánské údolí. The route offers unusual views of Sloup Castle. Unlike the other two routes, whose lengths are specified, this one is best described by its course: the stream, footbridges, valley, and views of the castle define this route choice.
Rock, Culture, and Water
Sandstone also shapes the destinations described beyond the trails. Passages were carved into the sandstone at Lesní divadlo. Glasses and telescopes were made in Samuelova jeskyně. Na Stráži refers to a rocky spur 354 m high, which drops steeply into the valley of the Dobranovský potok and lies about 0.5 km south of Sloup. These three details highlight different features: worked sandstone at Lesní divadlo, the production of glasses and telescopes in the cave, and a striking landform at Na Stráži.
For another connection with water, the outdoor swimming pool is on the shore of Radvanecký rybník. This differs from the route description of Cikánské údolí, where the Dobranovský potok accompanies the footpath.
