Arnultovice reveals itself through several aspects of its local history. The development of glassmaking connects earlier and later periods; the Church of the Holy Spirit adds art and events to the historical perspective, while Borská Skalka offers a climbing crag. This means visitors have different interests to choose from: those interested in local and cultural history will find different points of interest from those who climb.
Glassmaking History in Several Stages
Arnultovice was founded by hunters and charcoal burners in the 14th century. A later milestone came in the 18th century: as glassmaking began to flourish, the village started to merge with Nový Bor. Its founding and this merging mark two distinct stages in the village’s development. Charcoal burners were responsible for producing charcoal.
In the cadastral area of Arnultovice, there were at least around eighty glass-finishing businesses and smaller glassware merchants in the last third of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The history of local trades thus encompasses both glass finishing and commerce, and came significantly later than the merging that began in the 18th century.
The timeline links three distinct aspects: Arnultovice’s early origins, its merging with Nový Bor, which began in the 18th century, and the later development of glass finishing and commerce. This distinction is useful when looking at the village’s history: its founding and its later commercial history represent different phases.
Church of the Holy Spirit: Glass Art and Events
The Church of the Holy Spirit is located in the cemetery grounds of Nový Bor–Arnultovice. Its interior reflects the art of local glassmakers, bringing the connection with glass culture into the church itself. A memorial to those who fell in the First World War stands in front of the church. The interior and the memorial offer different points of interest: local glass art in one case, and remembrance of the war in the other.
Concerts, exhibitions and church services are held in the church, and these events are open to the public. The programme may change. If you are planning to attend a specific event, check the dates in advance.
Borská Skalka for Climbers
Borská Skalka is a basalt crag on a hill above the E442 road. The crag has five climbing routes and one variation; all are equipped with bolts or pitons for sport climbing. Its geology, location and routes give it a distinct focus alongside Arnultovice’s cultural attractions.
Route information may change, so check it before climbing. While visitors to the church should check the events programme for dates, climbers should consult the current route information. This helps you plan for each of the two attractions accordingly.
