In Louschnitz, a distinctive landscape and traces of the town’s history come together. The Kopaňský potok runs through the Loužnice valley; places to rest and go on excursions complement the views of the landscape. The history of glassmaking, a mill and the cultural centre offer further topics to explore as you plan your trip.
Valley, Stream and Viewpoints
The Kopaňský potok flows through the Loužnice valley along its entire length, dividing the municipality into two parts. State Road No. 10/E65 from Prague to Harrachov runs alongside the stream. The course of the valley and the route of the road are therefore among the defining geographical features of the place.
The Loužnické lavičky comprise eight named spots: U Modřínu, U Posrané hrobky, U Zvoničky, U Chaty, U Velkého vršku, U Albíny, Na koupališti and Na Vyhlídce. They are places to rest, go on excursions and enjoy beautiful views of the landscape. If you would like to focus your outdoor plans, you will find several named places to start from here rather than just a single viewpoint.
Another feature of the landscape is Loužnice’s fire-water reserve. It is fed by the Plchovský potok, which flows through a protected area. In the summer months, you can swim in the reserve at your own risk.
Mill and Glassmaking
Mill No. 1 stands on the northern edge of Loužnice, beside the Kopaňský potok, a left tributary of the Žernovník. The course of the millrace and its banks are clearly visible in the terrain. The mill thus links a specific place with visible traces of the former use of water.
The local history of glassmaking also encompasses a range of crafts and products. In 1894, Loužnice had several businesses making fashion jewellery. These included the Link family’s factory, where glass rods were made into beads. Shortly before the First World War, bead pressing in furnaces was introduced in Loužnice. There was also a workshop on Kopani for grinding glass rings, known locally as Bengle. Turning glass rods into beads, pressing beads in furnaces and grinding glass rings: these different activities give the history of the craft several facets, without reducing them to a single manufacturing process.
Another cultural craft continues today: the Loužnický Betlém has been made by Bedřich Rathouský since 2017. The Loužnice bell tower is another landmark with a specific date in the town’s history. It was rebuilt and restored; on 28 September 2014, it was consecrated along with a statue of Saint Wenceslas carved from the fallen linden tree.
Cultural Centre and Travel Interests
The cultural centre, Sokolovna, in Loužnice has been in existence since 1963. Its rooms are suitable for cultural and dance events, discos, theatre and film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, sporting events and gymnastics classes. The municipal library is also regularly based there. These uses complement the themes of landscape and craft with a cultural focal point of their own in the town.
If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Louschnitz, you can plan your trip around your main interests: are you especially interested in the valley, stream and excursion spots, or would you rather explore the history of glassmaking and the town? These themes offer different starting points without requiring you to follow a fixed itinerary.
