Glass, architectural history and recurring festivals give Železný Brod several distinct cultural reasons to visit. You can experience glassmaking through collections, demonstrations and creative workshops. Historic districts and datable buildings add another perspective. The aspect that interests you most may also influence your choice of travel dates.

Glass as collection, demonstration and workshop

The annual Skleněné městečko festival, held on the third weekend of September, includes glassmaking demonstrations and creative workshops for visitors. At the Muzeum a galerie firmy Detesk, more than 400 exhibits document the development of artisanal glassmaking in Železný Brod from around 1920 through the 1990s. The festival’s demonstrations and the museum’s wide historical scope offer different ways to explore glass.

The Minimuzeum skleněných betlémů Železný Brod currently displays around 80 glass nativity scenes from Alena Kortanová’s collection. A creative bead workshop complements the exhibition: visitors can make their own jewelry, such as necklaces, bracelets or earrings. Workshop details may change; check them before your visit. Another opportunity to watch glassmaking is at the LAMPGLAS, s. r. o. sales rooms, where visitors can watch work at the glassmaker’s torch.

Běliště and Trávníky: buildings and local history

Běliště houses the ethnographic exhibition of the Městské muzeum v Železném Brodě. The Běliště, which is open to the public, is a wooden building dating from 1807. Its nine exhibition rooms each focus on an aspect of the history of Železný Brod and its immediate surroundings. The layout makes local history the thread running through the visit, rather than limiting the exhibition to a single topic.

The historic district of Trávníky contains listed buildings of folk architecture whose preserved character reflects the Podkrkonoší region. Log houses and Neoclassical buildings were constructed at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. The walking route through Trávníky is just under one kilometer long. The district is also home to the sandstone fountain dating from 1828, a technical monument. The folk architecture and fountain thus show two different aspects of the historic building stock.

An ensemble spanning several centuries

Kostelní vršek is home to a late Baroque ensemble dating from the second half of the 18th century: the church dedicated to Saint James the Greater, a two-story rectory dating from 1723, and an ossuary dating from 1765. The history of Kostelík sv. Jana Nepomuckého Na Poušti is also precisely dated: Count Karel Josef Des Fours (1701–1775) had the chapel built in 1769. The wooden structure of the Železnobrodská zvonice is also noteworthy: two independent supporting structures serve separate purposes. One supports the building’s exterior, while the other carries the suspended bells.

The town hall adds to the historical overview. Železnobrodská radnice is a Neo-Renaissance building erected in 1890 to a design by the architect J. Zeyer; the left wing was added in 1909. If you want to compare different periods during your visit, you can see religious buildings, a bell tower with an independent structure and a later town hall side by side.

Festivals and dates throughout the year

Exhibitions and concerts are held several times a year at Kostelík sv. Jana Nepomuckého Na Poušti. The Svatojánská krojovaná pouť is also held there and has taken place annually in May since 1997. Specific dates may vary; check them before you travel. The Železnobrodský jarmark takes place annually and offers numerous stalls selling refreshments and traditional products. In September, Skleněné městečko provides another recurring event on the third weekend of the month. You can plan your trip according to your interest in the chapel festival, the market or the glass program.
