Plaw lies in a valley surrounded by hills, at the foot of Mikšova hora mountain. The town has two distinct connections to water: Plaw lies on the right bank of the Kamenice and also stretches along both banks of the Skalice stream. Visitors can choose from several focuses for their stay: the Palackého Trail, local history, and a ski resort above the town.
Valley, rivers and getting around
The road and railway line from Železný Brod to Tanvald–Šumburk run through the centre of Plaw. Cycling route 4251 offers another way to find your bearings: it leads from Zásada to Zlatá Olešnice and directly into the centre. Check the current route markings before using the route for navigation.
One access point to the Palackého Trail starts at Plavy railway station and follows a yellow hiking trail marking to the trail. If you plan to use this starting point, check the relevant transport connections separately.
Palackého Trail: scenery and history
The Palackého Trail starts in Plaw and follows the Kamenice River through rugged-looking landscapes. The terrain is more challenging, so this is an important part of planning your trip, along with the route's destination. The trail leads to the ruins of Navarov Castle, which date from the 14th century. The river, scenery and more challenging terrain each shape the trail in a different way.
The history of the route can also be pinpointed to its first section: the section from Plaw to Navarov was built in 1912 and was 3,130 m long. This historical measurement refers to the first section.
At the entrance to the Palackého Trail stood the factory of J. Liebig a spol. and workers’ and employees’ houses known as “Mlýnskách”. The company’s spinning mill in Mlýnskách began operating in 1854. The start of the trail thus connects the landscape route with a chapter in Plaw’s industrial history.
Ski resort and cultural points of interest
The Plavy ski resort is located above Plaw on the north side of Filoun Hill and below the Černá Studnice ridge. Information last updated on 18 October 2021 lists a 610 m Poma lift, a children’s rope tow, and three slopes ranging from 720 m to 1,080 m in length. Ski lessons for beginners at a ski school are also mentioned. Before travelling, check whether the resort is operating during the season and which facilities and lessons are currently available.
The Muzeum ČSA in Plaw is a nonprofit cultural and sports organization dedicated to protecting and preserving military history monuments. The town’s event history also includes editions of “Lety na saních” in 2002 to 2005, as well as an edition on 18 February 2023.
