Landscape and location

Scheibenreuth, called Okrouhlá in Czech, lies 12 km east of Cheb on the left bank of Jesenická Dam. The slopes around the Jesenický potok shape the local landscape; the stream flows into Jesenická Dam. The two names are not interchangeable for orientation: Jesenický potok refers to the stream, while Jesenická přehrada is the reservoir it flows into. Cheb lies to the west and serves as the reference point for direction and distance. The hillside location by the stream and the reservoir’s left bank thus offer two different perspectives on Scheibenreuth.

Memorial oak and local history

The first written records of Okrouhlá date back to 1299, when the estate belonged to the Paulsdorfer family. On the edge of the former castle park stands the memorial oak known as the “Valdštejn Oak” (in Czech, “Valdštejnův dub”). It was ceremonially named in 1910 in honour of Albrecht z Valdštejna. Its trunk circumference is 674 cm; it is one of the mightiest oaks in the Cheb region. The two dates refer to different milestones: 1299 marks the first written record of the village, and 1910 the naming of the oak. The tree thus connects a precisely located historical occasion with a specific measurement and its regional significance.

In the centre of Okrouhlá, beneath the memorial oak, stands the wooden sculpture “Ležícího Valdštejna”. The name Valdštejn thus appears both on the oak and on the wooden sculpture. The fortress of Okrouhlá is not open to the public.

Leisure, events and nature

Outdoor exercise equipment for children, young people and adults has been installed in the park beside the adjacent pergola. In addition, Easter, autumn and Christmas craft workshops are held regularly in Okrouhlá. The workshops offer recurring occasions at different times of the year; if you want to plan a trip around one, check the specific date in advance. For a stay, this means distinguishing between exercise facilities installed in the park and events planned for specific dates.

A local cycling route is marked “397 2129” and designated CZ/D 22. It runs through Úbočí, Milíkov, Okrouhlá, Lipová and Mýtina. Check the current markings before setting out. The forests around Okrouhlá are considered rich in opportunities for mushroom picking; seasonal conditions vary. The cycling route and mushroom picking therefore involve different planning considerations: for the route, it is the course and current markings; for opportunities in the forest, it is the time of year.

A campsite with camping facilities, swimming opportunities and safe access to the water is located within the municipality of Okrouhlá. Check the current facilities and lakeshore conditions before visiting. Unlike the cycling route and the seasonal opportunities in the forests, the campsite combines overnight accommodation with swimming, making it a separate point to consider when planning a stay.
