Wilkowitz combines a Rundling layout that remains visible today with historic paths and traces of railway history. The village also lies in the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area; a mineral spring and Cycling Route No. 3 complement its historical themes with nature and outdoor activity. This gives you a choice of different highlights as you plan your trip: the village’s layout, former transport routes, a destination reached on foot or a signposted cycling route.
Rundling layout and historic paths
Wilkowitz is one of the old Teplá villages. The village’s distinctive Rundling layout remains visible today. The term draws attention to the settlement’s overall form rather than to a single building. A historic country road from Žandov passed through Wilkowitz. It highlights the former connection between the two places and complements the settlement’s layout with a story about the road. Thus, the village’s form and a historic link to the outside world stand alongside one another as distinct aspects. The country road belongs to the past; the cycling route offers a different way of travelling.
Two details from railway history
On 17 December 1898, the first two trains on the Karlovy Vary railway line, travelling from opposite directions, met at Wilkowitz’s festively decorated station. The VLKOVICKÝ TUNEL is 240 metres long and lies on the railway ascent from Mariánské Lázně to Wilkowitz. The station encounter and the tunnel offer different points of interest: one is a dated event, the other a named structure along the line.
Landscape and cycling route
Wilkowitz lies in the Slavkovský les Protected Landscape Area. In its southern section, Cycling Route No. 3 passes through meadows and forests before reaching Wilkowitz. The protected landscape setting describes the village itself; the meadows and forests refer to the stretch of route before it arrives in Wilkowitz.
The orange-marked Cycling Route No. 3 is 21 kilometres long, passes through Wilkowitz and is recommended for mountain bikes. If you plan to ride the route, check the route details and trail conditions beforehand.
Mineral spring accessible by footpath
Křovištní kyselka is a mineral spring in Wilkowitz, accessible by footpath. A description updated in February 2024 notes vigorous bubbling of carbon dioxide, with numerous bubbles on the surface. Plan your visit via the footpath and check the current access conditions beforehand. This makes the spring, which is accessible by foot, distinct from the 21-kilometre cycling option.
