Chiesch combines a multifaceted castle history with brewing culture and early Baroque architecture. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the different types of visit: guided castle tours include the interior rooms, while the brewery tour requires advance booking. A section of national cycle route No. 35, which runs through Chyše, is another option. This lets you shape your stay around architectural history, sightseeing or cycling.

Castle History and Interior Rooms

Chyše Castle developed from a Gothic castle through Renaissance and Baroque forms, and was remodelled in the English Gothic style in the mid-19th century. Its architectural history thus spans several successive periods. The castle also houses an especially valuable ceiling oil painting by Petr Brandl, dating from 1699. The painting is from a significantly earlier period than the 19th-century remodelling, so the artwork and the development of the castle can be distinguished chronologically.

Guided tours include the formal and private interior rooms. These include Baroque halls, the library, Karel Čapek’s room and a collection of hunting trophies. These stops bring together different types of rooms with works of art and collection items. The specific tour may change, so check the tour details before your visit.

Brewery History with Advance Booking

The castle brewery was built between 1839 and 1841. A brewery tour includes a beer tasting and information about the brewery’s history. It also includes a visit to a 10-hl brewing system and technological areas, including the fermentation and storage cellars. You can take part by booking in advance, so plan this visit ahead of time.

Beer from Chyše is brewed according to old Bohemian recipes using Czech and Moravian malts, Saaz hops and spring water from the Doupov Mountains. These ingredients offer a concrete insight into the brewing tradition described here. The beers available may vary.

Monastery, Church and Bells

The former monastery of the Discalced Carmelites has been a protected monument since 3 May 1958. The early Baroque building has four wings and two storeys, arranged around a rectangular cloister garden with a cloister walk. The relationship between the building’s form and its garden makes the floor plan a distinct architectural feature alongside the eventful history of the castle.

The Church of the Annunciation is single-naved, faces east and has a semicircular end. At the same time, it adjoins the western building of the castle’s outer bailey directly. The structural relationship between the church and the castle’s outer bailey is another distinctive feature of the architecture in Chiesch. Two rare bells dating from 1520 and 1572 are housed in a church tower in Chiesch; they are not specifically attributed to the Church of the Annunciation.

Plan Your Cycling and Stay

National cycle route No. 35 passes through Chyše along the Valeč–Chyše–Žlutice–Manětín section. If you plan to ride this stretch, check the current route and conditions beforehand. This makes cycling a separate option alongside the cultural programme, without implying any additional information about walking or journey times from the route itself.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Chiesch, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on: the castle rooms, the brewery tour, available by advance booking, or a ride along the cycle route section. The options require different preparations—especially booking the brewery tour in advance and checking the cycle route conditions.
