Church and history in Chotěborky

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is the most significant historic building in Chotěborky. It stands on a hill and dominates the small village. On its south side, it has a preserved Gothic portal dating from the first half of the 14th century. A smaller death bell also hangs in the bell tower; it was donated in July 1928 by the Holan couple from Hustířany. The portal and the bell mark different periods: a Gothic architectural feature from the Middle Ages and a later donated furnishing.

The settlement of Chotěbořice is also part of the history of the church complex: it was significant in the Middle Ages, declined, and only the church complex survived. This places the church in context not only through its architecture, but also through the history of the settlement.

Architectural details and music

The birthplace of František Xaver Dušek is a solid Neoclassical building with stucco decoration on the façade. Together with the church’s Gothic portal, it shows two distinct architectural accents: a Neoclassical building with façade ornamentation here, and a medieval detail on the south side of the church there.

The Column of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the middle of the village square. It probably dates from 1730; it may have been created by Matyáš Braun or his workshop. The column is another reference point for architectural and art history, while its date and attribution remain uncertain or possible, respectively.

Music is also part of the cultural offering: the Hudební léto Chotěborky festival is dedicated to Baroque and classical music and offers concerts in historic church settings in Chotěborky and Dubenec. In 2026, it will be held for the 32nd time. If you would like to plan a trip around a concert, check the specific event dates in advance.
