Hornà Olešnice lies in the valley along the upper reaches of the Kalenský potok, between mountain ridges and 364 metres above sea level. The boundary between German- and Czech-speaking areas once ran here. The valley and former language boundary give the village two distinct points of reference: its physical landscape and the history of its language regions. When planning your stay, consider whether you are most interested in the valley, its buildings and memorials, or its cycling connections.
Valley and Landscape
Geology is also part of the valley landscape: deposits of Bohemian garnets occur in the floodplain sediments. The floodplain refers to the areas alongside the stream. The garnet deposits add a geological aspect to the landscape. The local landscape therefore encompasses both the terrain and the deposits in the floodplain.
Building History and Remembrance
Farmhouse No. 3 is listed in the Czech Republic’s register of immovable cultural monuments. It is a masonry, single-storey house with a uniform design, dating from the first half of the 19th century. “Single-storey” describes its height, while “masonry” describes its construction; the uniform design relates to its overall appearance. Together, these features make for a distinctive architectural portrait, in which the building form and date are equally important. For those interested in culture, it is a tangible point of reference for local building history.
A memorial to the victims of the First and Second World Wars stands in the cadastral area of Hornà Olešnice, near house No. 16. A Marian chapel is located beside a road. A statue of Mary, Queen of Heaven, stands by a house, 50 metres from the road in the direction of Dolnà Kalná. These religious landmarks complement the memorial to the war dead: the chapel is a building, while the statue is a separate work of art with a precisely specified location in relation to the road.
Cycling Connections and Ridge
There are two distinct cycling routes to consider. Cycle Route 4302 Kunčice–Mostek runs through the cadastral areas of Hornà Olešnice and Prostřednà Olešnice; Cycle Route 4294 Libštát–Hostinné crosses the northern part of the municipality. The difference matters when choosing a route: Route 4302 runs through two cadastral areas, while Route 4294 crosses the northern part of the municipality. Check the current signage before setting off by bike.
An old postal road runs along the northern ridge, offering views of the Krkonoše Mountains. As a landscape feature, it differs from the cycling-route details: the ridge and mountain views take centre stage here, whereas the route descriptions specify cadastral areas or the northern part of the municipality. If you plan to take the postal road as a detour, check its current accessibility and the condition of the section beforehand.
