The 76-kilometre “Krkonošská diagonála” cycling route, designated by the KRNAP Administration, passes through Strážné. The “Lom Strážné” natural monument, with its plant communities adapted to limestone and warmth, offers a different focus. When choosing a hotel, it is worth first deciding when you plan to travel and what your main interest is: nature, climbing, winter sports and local history each offer different reasons to stay.

The “Lom Strážné” Natural Monument

The natural monument lies within the cadastral area of Strážné and covers 4.22 hectares. It protects plant communities that developed on the exposed limestone bedrock after quarrying ended. These include the small-leaved marsh orchid; the largest population of this plant in the Krkonoše Mountains grows in the area. Thus, two themes meet at “Lom Strážné”: the former use of limestone and the plant life that developed on the exposed bedrock afterwards. For nature lovers, it offers a distinctive way to experience the landscape, alongside more active options for climbing and skiing.

Climbing and the Cycling Route

Hnědé skály and Hranostají skály in Strážné are KRNAP-approved climbing areas where climbing is possible year-round. Hranostají skály lies to the right, across a stream, near Hnědé skály. There are around ten protected routes at Hranostají skály, ranging from easy to moderate difficulty. As access and conditions may be subject to current national park regulations, check them before climbing.

The “Krkonošská diagonála” is a 76-kilometre cycling route that passes through Strážné and is designated by the KRNAP Administration. Another regional route, “Za zvonkohrou a pivem Fries,” runs from Vrchlabí via Mramorový lom to Strážné. These two named routes give cyclists and visitors exploring the region specific points of reference for planning, without needing to combine them into a single trip.

Local History Across Different Eras

The Protestant Art Nouveau church in Strážné dates from 1904. Mountain pasture farming has a considerably older economic history: it developed in the second half of the 17th century and in the 18th century, producing mainly butter and the famous Krkonoše herb cheese. The historical points of interest therefore span from church construction in the early 20th century to an earlier form of mountain farming.

Ski Area and Seasonal Services

The ski area in Strážné lies at an elevation of 800 to 1,300 metres. A free seasonal ski bus is available to skiers from the central car park in Strážné. During the season, it runs daily from 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Check the current timetable before travelling so you can plan your day accordingly.

The “Stráženský expres” is a seasonal excursion service to the ridges of the Krkonoše Mountains. It runs every year from 1 June to 30 September; here too, you should check the current timetable before travelling. The two transport services call for different kinds of planning: the express operates during a recurring annual period, while the ski bus is seasonally relevant for skiers.
