The history of the château, details in the English-style park and religious memorials give Bílé Poličany several cultural points of interest. There is also a walking option to Vinice and a cycling route through the town. When planning your visit, you can treat culture and physical activity as separate priorities.
The château, park and specific details about the town
In 1949, when Bílé Poličany Château belonged to Czechoslovak Radio, established and aspiring radio staff stayed there. This links a clearly dated stay with the château’s ownership at the time.
The former music salon in the English-style park was converted into the Chapel of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Beside the fountain stands a sandstone sculpture of a satyr. The conversion from music salon to chapel marks a specific change in the park’s history; the sculpture adds a distinct artistic motif.
The former chapel pavilion is now used mainly as a storage building. At house No. 33 there is a sundial: it is 1 metre in size and is located 2.4 metres above the ground. One measurement describes the size of the sundial, the other its height above the ground.
Religious memorials
A niche chapel in Bílé Poličany once housed a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. The gable of a niche chapel bears a prayer to this saint, carved into it. The Czech wording is: “G Jenne Nepomůcký patrone náš milý blaženče Český oroduj za náss.”
A simple plague column stands on the road that runs through Bílé Poličany. It bears the year 1729 and commemorates a year of plague in which many local families died. The religious memorials have different points of focus: the statue and prayer refer to John of Nepomuk, while the plague column recalls a year of plague and the many families who died.
Walk to Vinice or cycle through the town
Vinice is an excursion destination that you can easily reach on foot, including via the red-marked hiking trail. There is no vineyard, restaurant or viewpoint at the current destination. Bear these features in mind when planning your walk, so your expectations match the destination.
The 8 km Podzvičinska 4131 cycling route runs from Maňovice to Zábřezí through Bílé Poličany and has an elevation gain of about 120 m. It is part of a system of 23 marked routes that connect to existing cycling routes in the Královéhradecký kraj.
When weighing up walking versus cycling, there are different points to consider: the cycling route has named endpoints, a stated length and an elevation gain; a red-marked hiking trail leads to Vinice, and the destination is easy to reach on foot. You can choose the focus of your stay according to the type of activity you prefer.
