Proruby appeals to travellers looking to combine nature, local history and hiking in a single stay. The meadow Na Hadovně lies within the built-up area; from the summit of Kapraď Hill, views across the landscape, of Potštejn and of the Eagle Mountains can be enjoyed in good weather. Historical reference points include the first written mention in 1497 and the town’s move to independence in 1848. For planning, there are also specific route details: a yellow-marked hiking trail leads to Proruby; the route from Brandýs nad Orlicí to Potštejn is just under 15 kilometres long and is suitable for a half-day trip.
Na Hadovně: a special botanical site
Na Hadovně is a meadow tucked away within the built-up area of Proruby. The green-winged orchid was last observed there in 2009; Na Hadovně is the last known site for this species in eastern Bohemia. This combination of a meadow within the town and its botanical significance gives the nature theme a specific local setting. Visitors with a particular interest in plants will find a precisely identified feature here, alongside hiking and viewpoints.
Local history through the ages
The first written mention of Proruby dates from 1497. Until 1848, the town was part of the Potštejn estate; in 1848, it became independent. Its development can therefore also be understood through a clear change in administrative status: belonging to the estate was followed by independence. Historically, livelihoods were based mainly on agriculture and forestry. Later, weaving, lace-making and shoemaking were among the occupations. The political context and the former occupations thus offer two distinct ways of exploring local history.
Hiking trails, views and planning your time
A yellow-marked hiking trail leads to Proruby. Check the route and markings locally, as trail conditions may change. The hiking route to the summit of Kapraď Hill follows a local road. In good weather, the summit offers views across the landscape, of Potštejn and of the Eagle Mountains.
The route from Brandýs nad Orlicí to Potštejn is just under 15 kilometres long and is suitable for a half-day trip. This gives you a different basis for planning than the yellow-marked trail to Proruby: one description focuses on distance and time, while the other highlights its destination and trail colour. You can decide whether to set aside half a day for the named route or plan a trail with Proruby as your destination.
Events and dates
Proruby has been a checkpoint during recurring editions of the “Přes tři hrady” hiking event; one edition took place in 2023. Fishing competitions were held in Proruby again on 19 August 2023, with many children and adults taking part. Dates and offerings may change. If an event is likely to affect your travel dates, check the schedule for the relevant edition in advance.
