The historic center and the château come together naturally in Nové Mesto Nad Metují. The town’s architectural history comes to life through specific details on Husovo náměstí: the north side was reconstructed from 1951 to 1954 in the Renaissance style of the 1530s, and its design features distinctive “swallowtail” gables. When Husovo náměstí was renovated in 2009, the remains of a water reservoir came to light near the Holy Trinity monument.
Church, Château, and Exhibitions
Construction of the Church of the Holy Trinity was completed in 1519. Most of its furnishings date from the 17th century; the organ was made in 1656 by Jiří Weindt of Křešov. The completion of the building, its furnishings, and the organ therefore mark different points in time and can be viewed as distinct chapters in the church’s history.
Nové Město nad Metují Château offers two guided tours: “Zámecké interiéry” and “Od půdy po sklep.” Some access arrangements may vary by season, so check the dates for your chosen tour before visiting.
The Nové Město nad Metují Town Museum features exhibitions on the region’s history, crafts, and nature. The displays also include a collection of PRIM wristwatches, including the oldest, largest, and smallest watches in the collection. The range of topics thus extends from several regional themes to a closer look at wristwatches.
The Zázvorka Municipal Gallery presents changing exhibitions of paintings, photography, woodcuts, and sculptures throughout the year, across two floors. While the museum brings together a variety of regional topics, the gallery focuses on changing art exhibitions. This distinction can help you choose between local history and fine art.
Educational Trail, Circular Route, and Valley Views
The Obůrka Klopotov educational trail offers insights into the natural and historical features of the Klopotov Valley. Information boards are complemented by interactive elements for children, and basic visitor facilities are also available. The trail thus focuses on both the natural environment and the history of the valley.
The Městský vycházkový okruh town walking route begins near the bus station and follows the green-and-white markings of the local circular route. It passes through deciduous forest on its way down into the Metuje Valley. This gives it a different focus from the Obůrka Klopotov educational trail: the circular route is defined by its markings, woodland, and valley course, while the educational trail introduces visitors to natural and historical features.
If you are looking for a route between places rather than a circular walk, a pleasant path through the deep valley of the Klopotov and Bohdašínský streams connects Nové Město nad Metují with Slavoňov. Dvořáčkova vyhlídka offers a different perspective: from there, the view stretches across the Metuje Valley to the château of Nové Město nad Metují.
