In Broumov, monastery culture and architectural history meet hiking themes across the wider Broumovsko region. If you are looking for a hotel, the planned focus of your trip can help you decide: would you mainly like to discover cultural sites, or should hiking in the region also play a part?

Monastery Visit and Garden

The tour of Broumov Monastery is available year-round and is also suitable for children. The monastery garden is open to the public free of charge. This means there are two different options when visiting the monastery. Visiting hours for the garden may vary by season, so check them before your visit.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of St. Peter and St. Paul received its tall square tower in 1477. The Church of the Virgin Mary stands on the southeastern edge of Broumov. It is considered the oldest surviving sacred building in the Czech Republic built entirely of wood, and also one of the oldest structures of its kind in Central Europe. Its construction from sturdy oak beams joined without a single nail makes the building technique a distinctive part of its history. While a dated architectural feature is the focus at the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul, the age and wooden construction shape the character of the Church of the Virgin Mary.

The Old Town Hall is also part of Broumov’s architectural history: it is a registered cultural monument and one of the oldest town halls in Bohemian subject towns. For a different perspective on the region’s culture, the permanent exhibition at the Muzeum Broumovska occupies six rooms. The churches, town hall and museum each offer their own focus—from construction methods and heritage protection to a museum visit.

Hiking Trails in Broumov and the Broumovsko Region

The “Broumovské stěny I” hiking route begins at the Old Town Hall. The town hall is therefore not only a cultural monument, but also a specifically named starting point for this route. It leads to the Zaječí rokle trail junction, then continues along a yellow-marked hiking trail towards Kamenná brána and Koruna. These landmarks give an indication of the route without specifying a walking time or distance.

Forests, meadows and pastures shape the varied landscape of the CHKO Broumovsko Protected Landscape Area. The area also features meandering waterways with riverside vegetation, scattered trees and shrubs, wildlife, rare flora and numerous cultural monuments. A relatively dense network of marked hiking trails of varying difficulty connects notable places throughout the Broumovsko region. Hiking here is part of a broader landscape experience; the specific “Broumovské stěny I” route starts at the Old Town Hall.

Brewing History in Olivětín

In Olivětín, the brewery museum offers organised visitor groups guided tours of the production areas. Visitors can get an insight into the production of one of the oldest monastery beers. The museum also has a small permanent exhibition on the history of the brewery, focusing in particular on its development. If you are planning a group tour, check the current options in advance, as group arrangements may change.

You can plan your trip around different interests: the monastery and garden, Broumov’s churches and town hall, or hiking in the region. The brewery museum in Olivětín adds the history of brewing to the picture. These themes can help you choose your destination and the kind of stay you are looking for.
