Šípy combines a distinctive location on the boundary of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area with a clearly defined local cultural heritage. Velký kopec and the valley of the Šípský potok provide different points of reference in the landscape; there is also a protected statue and a preserved Baroque barn. The Rakovník Loop to Krakovec Castle also offers a specific option for cyclists. This combination can help you choose the village based on whether you want to focus on the landscape, monuments or cycling during your stay.
Landscape Along a Clearly Defined Boundary
Šípy lies on the western boundary of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. Velký kopec rises to 471 metres above Šípy. By contrast, the hamlet of Šípský mlýn lies in the valley of the Šípský potok. This gives you three distinct geographical points of reference: the boundary location, the elevation above the village and the valley setting of the hamlet. This distinction is useful for orientation: the location by the protected landscape area, the hill above the village and the hamlet’s position in the valley each describe a different aspect of the landscape.
Monuments and Baroque Architecture
The historic farmstead in Šípy has a preserved Baroque barn. It complements the church and statue with a different type of building. For architecture enthusiasts, the appeal lies in comparing the forms: a barn belongs to a farmstead, while a church is a religious building and a statue is a sculptural work. The barn’s preserved Baroque form is the main feature; the church and statue are protected cultural monuments.
The Church of St Peter in Chains (“kostel sv. Petra v okovech”) in Milíčov has been protected as a cultural monument since 3 May 1958. The statue of St John of Nepomuk (“sv. Jana Nepomuckého”) stands in Šípy’s village square and is also protected as a cultural monument. The locations help distinguish the two: the church is in Milíčov, while the statue is in Šípy’s village square. Their forms are different too: one is a religious building, the other a single monument. Together with the barn, they offer three different types of architecture and art to explore.
The date 3 May 1958 marks the start of the church’s protected status as a cultural monument, not the year it was built. This distinction helps separate its protection history from its building history when placing the monuments in their respective historical contexts.
Cycling as a Separate Part of Your Trip
On the Rakovník Loop to Krakovec Castle, cyclists turn off the cycling route in the neighbouring municipality of Šípy and continue by road to Řeřichy. Both the cycling route and the road section that follows are identified. If you include this in your plans, check the route before setting off and account for the transition onto the road. This makes cycling a distinct part of your trip, alongside the local landscape and monuments.
