Nový Dům offers different ways to explore the area: the Baroque Church of St. Mary Magdalene, historical traces of the village’s development and forest themes along a nature trail. The village is set in the picturesque landscape of the Křivoklátsko Protected Landscape Area. There are also plenty of opportunities for walks in the surrounding forests. You can tailor your stay to your interests, focusing on cultural history, walks or a themed trail.
Church and Village History
At the northeastern edge of the village, on the summit of a low hill beside a small pond, stands the Baroque Church of St. Mary Magdalene and its cemetery. The protected complex includes the church, an enclosure wall with a gate and the enclosed plots of the site. The protected area therefore includes not only the church building but also its enclosure and associated grounds.
The village’s history dates back to the 14th century, when the small monastery of Doupno, with a wooden chapel dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, stood in the area of Nový Dům. In the 16th century, an aurochs enclosure and a building for the keeper were established there. These formed the basis for the later village and its name. The timeline thus leads from a medieval small monastery to the facilities from which the later settlement developed.
Another historical landmark is the Baroque statue of St. John of Nepomuk. It stands in the forest in the Alžbětin forest district, about 1.8 km east of the village and about 600 m south of the road from Nový Dům to Lány. The statue is at the crossroads of forest paths, in the middle of a large, artificially created circular grassy clearing. It was erected in 1723 at the site of an expensive hunting event held for Empress Elisabeth Christine in 1721. The two dates give the monument a clear historical context: the event took place before the statue was erected.
Forest Themes and Route Planning
The Z dýmu a jehličí nature trail is 13.5 km long and has nine stops. Its themes include timber transport, forest railways in the Křivoklátsko region and elsewhere in Czechia, and charcoal production. The trail’s themes range from moving timber to putting it to use. If you are interested in forest history and wood processing, the trail offers a specific focus for planning your outing. Check the current condition of the route before your visit, as trail conditions can change.
Two other route details can also help with orientation. Cycling route 0047 runs along the southwestern edge of the Nový Dům administrative area. The Vůně dýmu a jehličí nature trail runs along its northeastern edge. The locations therefore differ by activity and direction: a cycling route in the southwest and a nature trail in the northeast. Together with the opportunities for walks in the surrounding forests, they offer different ways to spend time outdoors.
When looking for a holiday apartment, these themes can help you choose a destination. Consider whether you would like to devote your stay mainly to the church complex and village history, or include walks and forest themes. The historical sites, named routes and location details provide concrete points of reference without prescribing a fixed itinerary.
