How would you like to discover Vestec: through information about the planets along a trail, by exploring tree-lined avenues and landscape features, or through the town’s history? When planning your trip, it helps to choose a focus first. The educational Planet Trail begins at the cycle-path junction at Vestecký rybník, while Alej svobody leads from there towards Hrnčíře. Other attractions have their own distinctive features. When choosing your accommodation, it may help to consider which of these themes interests you most during your stay.
Planet Trail and Hiking Route
The educational Planet Trail begins at the cycle-path junction at Vestecký rybník. It runs for 1.4 kilometres and follows the route with information boards about all the planets in the Solar System. The trail also includes a climbing structure in the shape of a planetarium, depicting familiar constellations. This brings together two celestial themes and two ways of presenting them: the planets on the boards and the constellations on the climbing structure.
Alej svobody leads from Vestecký rybník towards Hrnčíře, following an old farm track. It is also part of the yellow-marked KČT hiking trail between Kunratice and Průhonice. If you are following this hiking route, check the current markings before setting out, as they may change.
At Vestecký rybník and Among the Avenues
The recreational area at Vestecký rybník includes a jetty and several viewing pontoons. Alej svobody also offers several features along the way: old varieties of Czech fruit trees grow there, and at its beginning you will also find a wildflower meadow, wooden walkways and seating. When planning, you can therefore take into account both the area by the water and the avenue’s distinctive planting and amenities. You can include the seating as possible spots for a break.
Alej prince Philipa has its own distinctive character. It consists of 100 lime trees and lies along the cycle path towards Kunratice, near the retention basin. In October 2022, a Poesiomat was unveiled there; it recites poems, sings and shares interesting facts about Vestec. If you plan a visit specifically to see it, check its current status beforehand.
Trees and Local History
The Dendrologická stezka Vestec, introduced in 2024, runs through various parts of the municipality. It features 15 trees, with information about their significance and uses available via QR code. The number of documented trees may grow. The trail thus combines a closer look at individual trees with further information about their significance and uses.
The town’s history can also be understood through different points in time. Vestec was first mentioned in writing around 1360, under the name “villa Beska” and in connection with the royal castle of Kostelec n/Sázavou, under whose lordship the town belonged. From 1700, Vestecký rybník and the municipality together belonged to the Dolní Břežany estate, which was administered by the Prague Archbishopric. The two dates represent different historical contexts: Vestec’s early written mention and the later affiliation of the municipality and pond. The pilgrimage tradition also continues in a changed form.
A Visit with a Set Time Window
Komunitní zahrada Vestec is open to the general public every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. as part of regular open days. A traditional sale of farm products also takes place there during these hours. If you plan to visit the garden during your stay, check the current schedule before travelling.
