Beer culture, Bronze Age history and trails through a protected landscape define Únětice, northwest of Prague. The village lies in the valley of the Únětický potok; its cadastral area borders the Prague cadastral area and the Tiché údolí protected area directly. When planning your visit, you can choose from different highlights: the brewery taproom, historic buildings, or hiking and cycling trails.

Brewery Taproom and Getting There

Beer brewing resumed in 2011 in the architecturally significant brewery building. Únětický pivovar has a brewery taproom with a welcoming garden and beer straight from the tank. This gives the village its own beer history, one that continues to the present day, without making beer the sole focus of your visit.

To reach Únětický pivovar, take Metro Line A to Dejvická, then bus 355 to the Únětice, Na parcelách stop; from there, walk a short distance. Check the connection again before setting out. Allow for the short walk from the stop.

Church, Bronze Age and Architectural History

Únětice was first mentioned in writing in 1125 as a village with a church. After 1770, a new church, a rectory and a farmstead were built. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was newly constructed and consecrated on 17 August 1783. These dates mark different chapters in the village’s history: the early mention points to the medieval settlement, while the later construction gives a tangible sense of its development in the 18th century.

Another historical connection reaches back to the Early Bronze Age. Between 1870 and 1882, the physician Čeněk Rýzner discovered and investigated a burial ground from this period; one investigation took place in 1879. The burial ground consisted of four groups of graves. The Únětice culture of the Early Bronze Age is named after it. The protected burial ground lies on the boundary of the cadastral areas of Únětice, Roztoky and Žalov—so its significance extends beyond the village name.

Chapels and the Historic Village Centre

Smaller buildings also make their own impression. The cemetery chapel of St Joseph is an immovable cultural monument, with a pentagonal exterior and a decagonal interior floor plan. West of the centre stands the Baroque Chapel of St John of Nepomuk, dating from 1716. In front of it is a column bearing a statue of the saint, dating from 1699. These two dates belong to different parts of the ensemble: the chapel is older than the statue in front of it.

In the historic village centre, east of the church, stands the Tereziánský špejchar, a granary dating from 1752. Together with the church, rectory and farmstead, it offers another perspective on the village’s architectural history. Visitors especially interested in architecture will find a different perspective here than in the Bronze Age history or at the brewery taproom.

Hiking and Cycling Trails in the Valley

A nature trail runs through the Roztocký háj – Tiché údolí and Údolí Únětického potoka nature reserves. Several hiking and cycling trails also run through the area and can be accessed from Únětice. One described route passes Dolní rybník below Holý vrch, goes through Tiché údolí and follows the Únětický potok to Roztoky. Alongside the village’s buildings, this offers a longer landscape route as a highlight in its own right.

In the Holý vrch area, the so-called Alšova vyhlídka is located on the upper part of the southwestern slope. Climbing practice areas lie above the Strážce trail; check their condition on site. The views from Holý vrch and the climbing practice areas offer a different focus from Únětice’s churches, chapels and Bronze Age history.
