Petkovy brings local history together with a distinctive landscape: the village is home to a protected granary, the Čížovky Nature Park lies nearby, and a described cycling route passes through Petkovy. The municipality consists of the localities of Petkovy and Čížovky. For planning your trip, the cultural monument, the history of the two localities and the landscape each offer a different focus.
A granary with traces of a fortress
Petkovy is home to the building “Sýpka – bývalá tvrz”: a grain granary protected as an immovable cultural monument, located in a farmyard with the remains of a former fortress. Its name combines two distinct references: “Sýpka” means grain granary, while “bývalá tvrz” refers to the former fortress. This makes both its classification as a granary and its history as a fortress tangible in a single building.
Place names and written records
The first written record of Čížovky dates to 1382: the village was first mentioned at that time as a possession of the Archbishopric of Prague, under the name Čížová (“villa Czizowa”). Petkovy has been documented in written sources since 1393. The first record of Čížovky therefore predates that of Petkovy by eleven years—a clear distinction in the dates of the two localities that now belong to the municipality.
The original name of the settlement of Petkovy was “Petkov.” It derives from the personal name Petko, a diminutive of Petr, and meant “Petko’s farmyard.” In 1556, Petkovy belonged to the Březno estate. The local history thus encompasses several perspectives: the origin of a name, early written records and later affiliation with an estate.
Nature park and cycling routes
The 386-hectare Čížovky Nature Park lies near Petkovy. Its landscape includes wooded areas, copses in fields, old fruit trees, meadows and ponds. A cycling route passes the nature park between Petkovy and Lhotky. This makes it possible to consider the natural area in the context of planning a specific route.
One described cycling tour is 22.1 kilometres long. It runs from Dolní Bousov via Route No. 8148 to Rohatsko and Svobodín, then via Route No. 8147 through Petkovy, Lhotky, Kobylnice and Ledce to Jabkenice. The 22.1 kilometres refer to the entire tour, not just its section through Petkovy. The route passes through gently hilly, wooded countryside. As route conditions can change, check the current route and conditions before setting off.
A spring event
A traditional witch-burning event is held at the sports ground in Petkovy on 30 April. For the 2026 edition, the lantern procession started at the local shop at 6 p.m. If you are planning your trip around this seasonal event, check the announcement for the relevant edition, especially the start time and meeting point.
