Písková Lhota’s cultural history is reflected in places with very different settings: Starý Stránov stands as a castle ruin on a rocky promontory above the Jizera, the Jewish cemetery lies on a steep slope, and Hradiště nad Vlčím dolem is in a forest. There are also two individual monuments in fields, as well as the Písková Lhota–Zámostí educational trail. Together, these include an archaeological castle site, a historic cemetery, individual cultural monuments and a circular route with information features. When deciding what to visit, it helps to distinguish between a walk along a set route and visits to individual historic sites.
Castle Ruin and Jewish Cemetery
Starý Stránov stands on a rocky promontory on the left bank of the Jizera, above the settlement of Zámostí near Písková Lhota. The castle ruin dates from the 13th to the 15th century. Starý Stránov is also classified as an important archaeological site in Písková Lhota. The rocky promontory, riverbank and position above the settlement give the castle site a clear topographical setting. Those interested in medieval sites can take in the architectural history and landscape together here.
The Jewish cemetery offers a different historical focus. It is a Baroque cemetery dating from around the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, which served several Jewish communities in the surrounding area. It lies in the Písková Lhota–Zámostí area on a steep slope below the former Starý Stránov fortress. This location establishes a spatial connection with the former fortress; the cemetery also has its own history and function. The cemetery is accessible from the east via a local municipal road. Given the steep slope, check the site’s condition before your visit.
Other Cultural Monuments in Forests and Fields
Hradiště nad Vlčím dolem is a registered immovable cultural monument in a forest about 1 km south of Písková Lhota. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk has different landmarks: it stands in a field 200 m north of the settlement and about 70 m from road 11/610. Here, the location details give both a direction from the settlement and the distance from the road.
The wayside shrine is also a registered immovable cultural monument in a field. It is about 10 m from a farm track. The track runs south from road 1/16 before crossing road 11/610. The different descriptions are helpful for orientation: the settlement and road 11/610 are the landmarks for the statue, while the wayside shrine is located by reference to the farm track running between the two roads. Forest, field and riverbank thus each form a distinct local setting for the cultural monuments.
Písková Lhota–Zámostí Educational Trail
The Písková Lhota–Zámostí educational trail is an easy, 5 km circular route. It starts and ends at the Písková Lhota municipal office. There are information boards and interactive features at ten stops. If you are looking for a clearly described walking option, this route has a set length and stated difficulty, as well as a clearly defined starting and finishing point. The stops complement the walk with information and interactive features, giving the trail a different emphasis from the individual cultural monuments. Check the trail’s condition locally before setting out.
