Nové Košátky is one of the two settlement centers of Košátky. The castle and the houses are arranged along a short central axis. This structure gives the place an easily understood spatial character: the castle and the buildings form a compact settlement. It is a good starting point for finding your way around before exploring the different aspects of the place. In addition to its architectural history, the Podzámčí Košátky grounds, with their workshops, orchard, pedunculate oaks, and other activities, shape the visit.
The Castle and Local History
Nové Košátky was founded around the castle in the second half of the 15th century. The castle is therefore both an architectural complex and the historical focal point of the settlement center. It comprises a massive tower from the Gothic fortress and interior buildings dating from two Renaissance construction phases. Traces of sgraffito have been preserved in the castle’s outer bailey. The tower and the Renaissance interior buildings represent different architectural phases; the sgraffito adds a detail from the outer bailey. For travelers interested in culture, this offers a concrete comparison: the fortress tower and the multi-phase Renaissance interior buildings make different architectural statements, while the sgraffito adds to the picture of the outer bailey.
Orchard and Protected Pedunculate Oaks
A large orchard with around 6,000 lavender bushes has been planted on the Podzámčí Košátky grounds. The approximate number gives an idea of the scale of the planting. Two pedunculate oaks also stand on the grounds, estimated to be about 500 and 300 years old; both have been declared protected memorial trees. The details emphasize different things: the orchard is described by an approximate number of plants, and the oaks by their estimated ages and protected status. Together, the planted orchard and two individual protected trees offer distinct landscape features.
Workshops and Other Activities
At Podzámčí Košátky, you can choose between taking part and exploring. At the herbal drink workshop, visitors can make their own natural products; at the gingerbread workshop, they bake honey gingerbread. Visitors can also explore the castle cellar and a mini-farm with animals on the grounds. The choice also depends on the kind of activity you are looking for: in the workshops, you make or bake something yourself, while the cellar and mini-farm are there to explore. Ask the operator in advance about current practical arrangements and visiting options before making these activities a firm part of your plans.
Getting There and Finding Accommodation
Košátky railway station is part of an integrated transport system. Check the current timetable and ticket options before you travel, as station services and ticketing rules can change. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide in advance what you want to focus on: cultural history, a hands-on activity, or the local landscape features?
