In the summer of 1862, Bedřich Smetana stayed at Niměřice Castle with his wife. The castle architecture and the chapel opposite the castle gate give the place a cultural and historical connection; cycling routes in the surrounding area and low-lying forests suited to recreation offer further themes for your trip.

The Castle and the History of the Village

Jan Weithof had the late Classicist castle built in 1832. It is an L-shaped, two-winged building with a roof bell tower and a clock. A fortress once stood on the site of the present-day castle. The first written mention of Niměřice dates from 1354; at that time, the site was occupied by a farm belonging to Adam of Niměřice.

Bedřich Smetana is also part of the castle’s history: he stayed there with his wife in the summer of 1862. The dates refer to different points of reference: 1354 marks the first written mention of the village and the farm that stood there at the time, 1832 the construction of the castle, and 1862 Smetana’s stay. The fortress points to an earlier building on the same site. This distinction helps place the history of the village and the castle in chronological context.

The Castle Park and Chapel

The listed castle grounds include an extensive English park enclosed by a perimeter wall with gates.

Opposite the castle gate stands the pseudo-Romanesque Chapel of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary (“Kaple Korunování Panny Marie”), dating from 1864. Remnants of paintings have been preserved above the entrance portal and inside. The chapel also retains an original entrance bearing the year 1812. The castle and chapel therefore differ in style as well: the late Classicist building is complemented by the pseudo-Romanesque chapel.

Cycling Routes and Countryside

Cycling routes 8157 and 143 pass through the area around Niměřice. A regularly maintained path also runs from Niměřice along the trackbed of a disused railway to the edge of Dolní Cetno. Check local conditions if you plan to take this path.

Niměřice lies on the banks of the Strenický potok. Low-lying forests suitable for recreation can be found around its course. Alongside the buildings, the riverside setting and wooded surroundings offer further landscape-related interests for your trip. Cycling routes and recreation in the forests offer different options when planning your activities.

Plan Your Stay

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Niměřice, the reason for your trip can help determine its focus: the castle and chapel invite you to explore the village’s history and architecture, while the cycling routes and low-lying forests offer opportunities for activities and recreation. If the castle grounds are a deciding factor, check whether a visit is possible before you travel: the grounds open their gates only for events such as weddings, celebrations or conferences.
