In Chotětov, specific local landmarks help you find your way: the Church of St. Prokop stands on the village square in the center of the municipality, while the wayside shrine Boží muka is at its southern edge. A cycling route through the Lower Jizera region also reaches Husovo náměstí. This allows you to combine architectural and art history with a clearly identified cycling connection and take the different locations within the municipality into account when planning.
The Church of St. Prokop and its ensemble
The church stands on a change in elevation that significantly shapes the appearance of the village square. Around 1546, it was built in the Gothic style on the site of an older church. The bell tower was constructed in 1759–1760, and the church was remodeled in the Baroque style in 1773. This makes it possible to distinguish three building phases: the original construction, the later tower, and the Baroque alterations.
The church’s protected ensemble includes the Chapel of the Holy Cross and the perimeter wall with gates, stairs, and niche chapels. Southeast of the church, a niche chapel stands in line with the cemetery wall. It is a simple, rectangular brick building. Thus, a view of St. Prokop takes in not only the church’s architectural history, but also the named components of the ensemble and the location of this chapel.
Sculptures and chapels in Chotětov
Near the village square stands the sculpture group “Coronation of the Virgin Mary.” The Baroque work dates from the 18th century, is made of natural-colored sandstone, and is about five meters high. The Baroque connection links the sculpture stylistically to the remodeling of St. Prokop; at the same time, two different art forms stand side by side here: the alteration of a church building and a sculpture group.
At the southern edge of Chotětov stands the polygonal, brick-built wayside shrine Boží muka, a place of devotion dating from the late 17th century. It is located at the intersection of the roads to Bezno and Jizerní Vtelno. Its location is therefore quite different from that of the church on the central village square: the southern edge of the municipality and the two road directions are the key landmarks for finding Boží muka. Compared with the sculpture group near the village square, Boží muka is the older of the two dated works.
A chapel with a spring stands beside the Church of St. Prokop. It dates from 1819. Its location right next to the church and its own date provide another historical point of reference in the municipality.
Getting to Chotětov by bike
The route through the Lower Jizera region is clearly identified for cycling: the cycling route reaches Chotětov from the Hřivno signpost via Route 8145 and continues to Husovo náměstí. Hřivno, the route number, and the destination square provide three clear reference points for these directions. The Church of St. Prokop stands on the village square at Husovo náměstí, in the center of the municipality. The cycling route therefore leads to a named destination where the central church location can also be found.
