Loukov lies on a low hill on the right bank of the Jizera. The historic village centre, the Church of the Holy Trinity, and natural features in the municipality and nearby provide several points of interest for a stay. The well-preserved village layout and the church’s architectural history are particularly distinctive.
Village Conservation Area and Timber-Framed Houses
The historic village centre forms the Loukov Village Conservation Area (ÚSKP number 2226). Its preserved urban layout is considered a remnant of the medieval settlement. Timber-framed houses, timber-framed granaries, and other farm buildings are particularly characteristic. Most of the surviving timber-framed buildings date from the second half of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. The medieval settlement pattern and the largely more recent timber-framed buildings can thus be read as distinct layers from different periods.
The Šonský Farm at house no. 27, which includes a timber-framed granary, is a specific example of rural architecture. Residential houses and agricultural buildings thus stand side by side as two aspects of the village’s surviving architecture.
Church of the Holy Trinity and Local History
The Church of the Holy Trinity was built in its present Gothic-Renaissance form in 1610–1612. After a fire in 1819, it was restored in 1836; the Neo-Romanesque tower dates from this restoration. The tower therefore belongs to the restoration phase, not the church’s original construction phase.
Inside the church is a pewter baptismal font dating from 1582. It is therefore older than the church’s present architectural form. The church grounds are among the cultural monuments within the village conservation area. There are also dated landmarks outside the church: a Neo-Gothic tomb for the Princes of Rohan was built next to it in 1824. An earlier Šlik tomb in Loukov had already been converted, emptied, and prepared for the Rohans in 1822. The statue of Saint John of Nepomuk is a Baroque work dating from 1719.
Nature and Cycling Route
The Bažantnice u Loukova Nature Reserve lies within the municipality. Nearby, west towards Hubálov, a small pseudokarst cave is located on the right, rocky slope of the Jizera valley. Sinter curtains have formed inside it through seepage water. If you would like to include the cave in your plans, check local access arrangements in advance.
The Greenway Jizera long-distance cycling route passes the Church of the Holy Trinity. This creates a direct connection between the church and the cycling route. Check local signposting before setting out.
Transport and Planning
The municipal transport plan from 2020 describes public rail and bus services in Loukov. Rail connections are available via Loukov u Mnichova Hradiště station; three bus stops serve the built-up area. As routes may change, check timetables and connections for your travel dates.
