Vrbno combines a historic village center with the Vrbenské pools on the left bank of the Vltava. A protected village heritage conservation area, historic buildings, a nature area, a nature trail and cycling routes give you several specific starting points for planning your trip. Vrbno was first mentioned in writing in 1241. The histories of its buildings and ownership add further perspectives on the village to this early date.
Village History and Protected Buildings
Vrbno is designated as a protected village heritage conservation area. The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross was originally a Romanesque building from the 12th century and was later remodeled in the Gothic and Baroque styles. If you are interested in historic architecture, this sequence offers a specific way to explore the village’s history: the church cannot be attributed to just one construction phase.
A row cemetery is located in the area around the church and served, at least in part, as a church cemetery. Another protected feature is farmstead No. 21. It comprises a residential building, a barn or granary, a stable, a cart shed, a boundary wall and the associated grounds. The farmstead lies southeast of the church, on the edge of the historic village center and near a former course of the Vltava. Thus, a farmstead ensemble and a historic riverside setting complement the religious architecture.
Historically, Vrbno was divided: one part belonged to the Mělník estate, while another initially belonged to the Mléčků family of Vladiks and later to the Order of the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star. The village’s history encompasses both architectural changes and a historical division of ownership.
The Vrbenské Pools on the Vltava
The Vrbenské pools lie south and southeast of Vrbno, on the left bank of the Vltava. The area covers 43.66 hectares and includes part of an old Vltava channel as well as a system of pools. A tranquil natural area, it is also a fishing spot and a refuge for birds and amphibians. If you are interested in landscapes and wildlife, the area brings together water, habitat and fishing as specific points of interest.
Nature Trail and Cycling Routes
The Vrbno–Zelčín nature trail is near ZOOPARK Zelčín, is 3.5 km long and has 13 stations. Its length and number of stations give you two specific points of reference for getting to know this trail. Two differently described routes are of interest to cyclists: the Vrbno–Hořín section is part of Cycle Route 7; the Vrbno–Mělník–Horní Počaply cycle route follows asphalt and paved paths. For the first section, its inclusion in Route 7 is specified; for the second, the surface is described. This lets you choose based on whether you are more interested in a nature trail with stations or a cycling route with specifically described features.
