Discover Volárna through its landscape, local history and culture. A small, old water basin in the middle of the fields, historic water management and a planned village layout offer different themes to explore during your stay.

Waterscapes and Historic Water Management

The protected natural feature “Váha u Volárny” is a small, old water basin surrounded by trees in the middle of the fields. It is about half a kilometre from Volárna. The trees and open fields form the landscape setting; the agricultural character of the surrounding area is another notable feature alongside the water basin.

Historic water management reflects a different period. The Bačovský side channel was built in 1475 and brought water from the Cidlina. The Bačovský Pond was gradually drained and abandoned in the 18th century. The side channel is notable for its construction and water supply, while the pond reflects gradual change leading to its abandonment. Together, these different developments make the transformation of the waterscape a subject in its own right, alongside the landscape as it is today.

Local History and Village Layout

Volárna was founded in 1778 on the site of former stables known as “panská volárna”; these stables stood within the territory of the former village of Břežany. The founding of the settlement and its earlier connection to Břežany represent two distinct periods in its history.

Volárna retains its planned village layout. Simple houses are arranged in clear lines within the open agricultural landscape of the Polabí region. For visitors, the arrangement of the houses and the open agricultural setting go together; the village’s layout offers a distinct perspective alongside its individual historical landmarks.

Tradition and Historic Memorial Sites

Staročeské máje is a longstanding local tradition in Volárna. It provides a cultural point of reference alongside the history of the buildings and landscape. If local traditions are among the things you look for when choosing a destination, this offers a different perspective from the planned village layout or waterscape.

The local history of war also includes 104 men from Volárna who were conscripted; 15 of them fell in battle.

The 1919 memorial to the victims of the First World War also serves as a central cemetery cross and commemorates local victims of the events of the 1914–1918 war. Volárna’s wooden bell tower also dates from 1919 and is classified as folk architecture. Both date from the same year but serve different purposes: the memorial commemorates the victims of war, while the tower formerly had religious and practical functions. The bell called people to prayer, announced the evening and midday chimes as well as everyday and festive events, and could warn of danger.

Walking and Getting There

The surroundings of Volárna are ideal for walking. If you want to include both landscape and culture in your stay, walking can be another focus alongside the village layout, waterscape and memorial sites.

For travel planning, bus and rail are two options to consider: Volárna has bus services integrated into the Prague Integrated Transport system; the nearest railway station for Volárna is in Velký Osek, 4 km away. Before travelling by bus, check the timetable for your dates, as service information can change. You can take this transport information into account when planning your holiday rental and stay.
