Kouřim brings together a range of cultural and historical themes: the open-air museum makes regional architectural styles easy to compare, museums explore the town’s history, and the settlement history of Stará Kouřim stretches back to early times. When planning your visit, it is worth keeping exhibitions, course dates and the stated duration of the hiking route in mind separately.
Folk Architecture and Crafts
The Muzeum lidových staveb v Kouřimi is the only open-air museum in Czechia with a regional scope. It allows visitors to compare different regional types of folk architecture from the 17th to the 19th century directly. The site includes 14 larger residential and agricultural buildings as well as several smaller monuments; the number may change as the museum develops in the future. The focus is therefore not just on a single type of house, but on comparing different building styles.
The open-air museum hosts numerous folklore and other accompanying programmes throughout the year. One-day courses in traditional crafts are held regularly, giving you the chance to learn practical skills and take home a handmade souvenir. Check the individual dates and course availability before your trip. There is a car and bus park in front of the entrance; if you are arriving in a large vehicle, it is advisable to check local parking options.
Museums and Architectural History
The Muzeum Kouřimska is housed in the historic Old Town Hall and documents the history of Kouřim and its immediate surroundings. A permanent exhibition is open year-round, while the temporary exhibitions are renewed three times a year. There is also a long-running archaeological exhibition devoted to the early medieval Hradiště Stará Kouřim. Before your visit, check the exhibition’s current status and the exhibition programme.
St. Stephen’s Church is considered one of the most significant examples of early Gothic European architecture. The Chapel of St. Catherine in its crypt features an octagonal vault with a star-shaped pattern and murals from the early 15th century. The Prague Gate is another testament to the town’s history: it is the only surviving one of Kouřim’s five former entrance gates and is among the best-preserved monuments of its kind in Central Europe.
Stará Kouřim and the Hiking Route
About one kilometre east of Kouřim, Stará Kouřim sits on an elevated gneiss outcrop above a bend in the Výrovka River. The steep slopes reach heights of up to 60 metres. The hill was inhabited from the Late Stone Age to the early Middle Ages. Near the Hradiště, the Stará Kouřim educational trail passes the Lechův kámen gneiss rock; the trail provides further information about the Hradiště.
One hiking option with a stated distance is “Okolo Kouřimi po stopách prvních Slovanů”. The route is 4.6 kilometres long, takes about 1.5 hours, and starts and ends in Kouřim. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
A Baroque Chapel
The Chapel of Panny Marie Pomocné is pentagonal and was built between 1724 and 1727 to a design by Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel. Visitors cannot access its interior; check this access information before your trip. Together with the early Gothic church, the museums and the landscape of Stará Kouřim, it offers another architectural history highlight for your stay.
Plan your visit according to whether you would like to spend more time exploring the architectural styles at the open-air museum, the exhibitions or the landscape around Stará Kouřim. Course and exhibition dates are important; allow about an hour and a half for the hike.
