The preserved historic center of Týnec nad Labem lies on a promontory above the Elbe. The Týnecké mokřiny Nature Reserve is also within the cadastral area, an important habitat for the fire-bellied toad in the Elbe Lowland. This places architectural and memorial history alongside a protected wetland habitat as distinct aspects of the town. If you tailor your trip to your own interests, you can explore these highlights separately rather than combining them into a single sightseeing itinerary.

Elbe Landscape and Wetland

The Belvedér viewpoint next to the school offers views of Kunětická hora, the Iron Mountains, the Čáslav Basin and the Elbe Lowland in the direction of Kolín. How clearly you can see each destination depends on the weather. The viewpoint thus draws the eye toward several parts of the landscape, while the historic center is shaped by its position on the promontory above the Elbe.

Týnecké mokřiny is a 78.2773-hectare nature reserve within the cadastral area of Týnec nad Labem. The fire-bellied toad (Bombina bombina) provides a specific point of reference for the nature here: the area is an important habitat for this species in the Elbe Lowland. At the same time, the wetland consists of a mosaic of different communities associated with standing water. These include higher plants that swim, float on the water’s surface or grow underwater, as well as reed beds and willow stands. The species’ name thus describes only one part of the area; the different plants and stands also contribute to the habitat’s diversity.

Architectural History and Memorial Sites

The history of the Church of St. John the Baptist can be traced through several dates. The foundations were laid in 1780, and the present-day church was completed in 1781. The frescoes by Josef Kramolín also date from 1781. The Baroque side altars are older: they date from 1720 and were transferred here in 1786, together with the organs, from the dissolved Sedlec Monastery. The construction period, the date the altars were made and their later transfer are distinct stages in the history of the church’s furnishings. The church is listed in the Central Register of Immovable Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

Another historic building is the Panský dům, dating from 1584. On the first floor, it preserves a hall with false mirror windows and a 1803 wall painting by Adalbert Schlechta; the building is also listed as a cultural monument. The Marian Column stands in the middle of Masaryk Square in Týnec nad Labem. Michael Baron Melas, his wife Josefa and Augustin de Millern are buried in the Melas Crypt. Together, these details offer different perspectives on cultural heritage: dated architectural and decorative features, a monument in a precisely named location, and a crypt containing people known by name.

Museum and Regional History

The Perner Family and Týnec nad Labem Museum has a permanent exhibition on the history of the town and its surroundings. The topics also include La Tène and Slavic settlement. The exhibition thus goes beyond the architectural history of individual buildings to explore earlier periods of settlement. If you would like to include the museum in your visit, check its opening arrangements separately.

Hiking and Cycling

The CKH5 cycling route, “Okolo Labe do Týnce nad Labem,” is 51.8 km long, with a possible variation of ±5%. A blue-marked hiking route leads from Týnec nad Labem to Labská Chrčice and through the Železná vrata gorge by the hillfort on the summit of Kolo. The summit is 225 m above sea level. The routes differ in the way the supplied waypoints guide you: for CKH5, the focus is on the route length, with a possible variation; for the hiking route, the markings, start and end points, gorge and hillfort are specified. This can help you decide whether you would rather follow a cycling route or a marked hiking connection.
