Horní Kruty combines a distinctive Baroque church with its setting in Hornokrutsko, the hilly, heavily wooded area in the southwest of the Kolín District. The Church of St. Wenceslas and several buildings with very different construction histories give the village a clear cultural focus. There is also a pond and historical references to community events. If you are considering a stay that combines local history and landscape, these features can help you assess Horní Kruty as a possible destination.

Hornokrutsko and the Church of St. Wenceslas

The Church of St. Wenceslas stands at the highest point in Hornokrutsko, 410 metres above sea level. It is a distinctive landmark of the municipality of Horní Kruty and a protected cultural monument. It is also considered one of the significant examples of Baroque architecture in the Kolín region. Its history can be pinned down to two specific dates: the foundation stone for the present-day church was laid on 28 July 1740; the new building was consecrated on 6 October 1743.

On the same day, 6 October 1743, the Chapel of St. Gothard in Horní Kruty was also consecrated. The church and chapel therefore belong to the same historical period, while the construction history of other village buildings extends into the 19th and 20th centuries. Those interested in architecture will find not just one construction date here, but several distinct milestones in the village’s history.

Construction, remembrance and community

The water tower stands in the centre of the village green and shapes the local streetscape. It was completed in 1927 along with the municipality’s water supply and electrification. The primary school has a different construction history: the original structure of the present-day building was built in 1849. It took on its current form with the addition of a new north wing in 1886. These dates link three buildings to different developments: Baroque sacred architecture, municipal infrastructure and the expansion of a school building.

The building of the former Kampelička, built in 1931, also bears a plaque commemorating the victims of Nazism. During the Second World War, the family of MUDr. Hugo Teller was deported from there and subsequently murdered in concentration camps. The site thus links a specific building with a solemn remembrance of the persecution and murder of the family.

The history of Sokolovna is also connected with community involvement: its construction brought together voluntary labour, donated building materials, and contributions from local residents and neighbouring municipalities.

Putting events and travel into context

Event information should be considered in its specific time context. Children up to the age of 15 could take part in the children’s fishing competition at the pond in Horní Kruty on 29 August 2026, accompanied by an adult and using their own fishing rod. These conditions applied to the specified date. The Hornokrutská 40 was a public cycling competition over 40 kilometres, which could be completed on a mountain bike or cross bike. The tenth edition took place on 10 August 2019.

For the Kolín–Svojšice–Kouřim–Sázava connection, a timetable effective from 7 April 2025 listed PID bus route 821 as serving Horní Kruty. It also named stops in Dolní Kruty and Přestavlky. Check current departures before travelling so your plans match the timetable in force.

Horní Kruty as a place to stay

When looking for a holiday rental, you can consider whether the church and the village’s architectural history are the main attractions for you, or whether the hilly, heavily wooded landscape of Hornokrutsko is what draws you. Local sights and historical event dates offer different points of interest, without implying that they form a current events programme. This way, you can choose Horní Kruty based on what matters for your stay and plan your journey using current connections.
