Islands, trails and protected areas

Lastovo Islands Nature Park was designated in 2006 and covers 195 km². Of this, 143 km² is sea and 52 km² is land; the park includes 46 islands, islets and reefs, including Lastovo and Sušac. Lastovo has more than 200 km of marked hiking trails. The UBLI–LASTOVO cycling route is 9.45 km long, paved and rated difficulty level 3 out of 5. Thus, the extensive network of marked hiking trails is complemented by specific details about a cycling route: its length, surface and rating. Check the latest route information before setting out.

Mljet National Park has hiking and cycling trails; canoes, kayaks and bicycles can be rented at Mali Most. The national park is the oldest marine protected area in the Mediterranean region. The Benedictine monastery on the island of St. Mary, in Veliko jezero, is the national park’s most visited site. On Mljet, Saplunara is also protected as a significant landscape. It comprises the two sandy bays of Velika Saplunara and Mala Saplunara, surrounded by pine forest.

A boat tour in Lastovo Islands Nature Park includes a stop on Mladina Island in Saplun Bay, where swimming and diving are possible. Tour itineraries and reservations may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before planning. You should also check current route information and rental options in Mljet National Park.

Neretva: Waterways and bird habitats

A traditional boat trip takes you through the Neretva’s narrow canals and side channels. Hosts explain local fishing and citrus growing along the way. Prud, in the lower reaches of the river, is a special ornithological reserve and an important breeding ground for wetland birds. Modro oko and Lake Desne form a special nature reserve comprising a lake and a canal system that provides a habitat for migratory birds. The experiences described thus range from a trip on the water to observing different wetland habitats.

Archaeological sites and history

The Narona Archaeological Museum in Vid opened in 2007 as Croatia’s first in situ museum. Ereš Tower is an open-air epigraphy museum with Latin inscriptions and Roman monuments from the ancient city of Narona. Finds from an early Christian church and a medieval cemetery are displayed in the Church of Sv. Vid. Here, Roman inscriptions and monuments sit alongside finds from the early Christian and medieval periods.

Other archaeological sites have their own highlights: Vela spila above Vela Luka on the island of Korčula is one of Croatia’s most important archaeological sites. Rača Cave on Lastovo is an archaeological site with traces of Illyrian and Roman presence. Šipun Cave near Cavtat is a protected speleological area with an underground lake, designated in 1963. The comparison thus ranges from a cave with finds from different periods to a significant archaeological site and a protected area with an underground lake.
