Orebić’s cultural character can be read in very different traces: a cave used as an Illyrian sanctuary during the Iron Age, and a museum that preserves the memory of captains and seafarers. There are also protected historic settlements, a Franciscan monastery on Sv. Ilija, and hiking trails with various geographical connections.

Cave, sanctuary and protected historic settlements

The Špilja Spila Nakovana archaeological site is located in Nakovanj and is a protected cultural property. The cave was used as an Illyrian sanctuary during the Iron Age, in the 3rd to 4th century BC. For those interested in cultural history, the site combines a specific date with an interpretation of its former religious use.

The protected cultural and historical complex “Povijesni prostor Nakovana” comprises Gornja and Donja Nakovana. In Viganj, “Povijesna ruralna cjelina Viganj” is another protected cultural and historical complex. This distinguishes the cave as an individual archaeological site from the protected complexes; the names lead from Nakovana’s archaeological history to Viganj’s rural settlement.

Another specific trace leads to Kuna Pelješka: the Church of Our Lady of Loreto – Delorita was built there in 1681 in honour of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Loreto. Locally, it is known as Gospa od Delorite. The construction date and local name provide two points of reference for the church: its dedication and its local name.

Maritime heritage and the monastery

The Orebić Maritime Museum preserves the memory of captains and seafarers. Its collections include archaeological and maritime collections as well as historical book collections. Together, these bring seafaring alongside archaeological and written perspectives on history.

The Franciscan monastery was built in the 15th century on Mount Sv. Ilija, at an altitude of 150 metres. It houses the votive museum, which contains a painting of the Virgin Mary that, according to tradition, is said to have washed ashore in Orebić in the 15th century. The story about the painting thus refers to the same century as the construction of the monastery, but remains a tradition. Behind the Franciscan church is the captains’ cemetery, with the Mimbelli family mausoleum.

Sv. Ilija and views of the peninsula

Orebić lies between Mount Sv. Ilija on one side and the Pelješac Channel on the other. The mountain is also a point of reference for hiking: the steepest hiking trail to Sv. Ilija, Ruskovići (04), starts in Orebić. Check the current trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.

In the broader regional context of the Pelješac Peninsula, four of the six hiking trails lead to Sv. Ilija’s highest peak above Orebić. This describes the trail network across the entire peninsula; the Ruskovići route, by contrast, is specifically identified by its starting point in Orebić. This keeps the specific starting-point information distinct from the broader view of the peninsula.

Wine tours in Orebić

Wine tours to Orebić’s wineries and wine cellars are another option for visitors. Specific tours and providers may change, so check the current options before making plans.
