The historic center of Viganj lies right on the seafront. Windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing are possible on the narrow Pelješac Channel. This combination of architectural history and activities on the water gives your choice of stay a clear focus. If you are interested in both, Viganj offers concrete points of interest: the historic settlement core by the sea and Ponta Liberan Beach.
Water Sports on the Channel
The wind is particularly strong on the channel. Near Ponta Liberan Beach, there are schools that rent equipment and teach beginners to surf independently. The beach is therefore the specific point of reference for schools, lessons and rentals; the narrow channel provides a shared setting for windsurfing, kitesurfing and sailing. In July 2013, a windsurfing world championship was held in Viganj, a dated reference point in the town’s sporting history.
Recreational Facilities on Land
Viganj’s public recreational facilities include a lit mini-football pitch and outdoor fitness areas, each with six pieces of equipment. Changing facilities and showers are also available. If you would like to include some land-based exercise alongside activities on the water, these facilities offer options for mini-football and outdoor training.
Churches and Local History
The historic center of Viganj is clustered around a Dominican monastery built in the 17th century and its associated church. The Dominican complex is right on the coast and forms the oldest part of the settlement by the sea. In 1671, the Bishop of Ston, Petar Luccari, authorized the Pelješac shipowner Marko Krstelj to build the Dominican monastery and the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary (Gospe od Rozarija). The present-day Church of St. Michael was built in 1740. Its portal is designed in the Baroque style; four oval windows, a rose window and a three-arched bell gable are also among its architectural features. The sequence from 1671 to 1740 marks two distinct events: the authorization to build the monastery and the later construction of St. Michael’s Church.
Kuvenat was a former Dominican monastery and is now used as Viganj’s cultural center. The site thus combines a former monastic function with its present-day cultural use.
