In some places, Vražji prolaz Canyon is only about two metres wide. Its hiking trail runs partly cut into the rock above the stream and partly over bridges and stairs. This striking landscape is a great starting point for discovering the Municipality of Skrad: alongside nature and hiking trails, the area is also known for its technical heritage, churches and a raspberry festival.

Canyon, cave and spring

Vražji prolaz and Zeleni vir form a protected landscape, designated as protected in 1962 and covering 252 hectares. Vražji prolaz Canyon is about 800 metres long. Its narrow sections and the trail along the stream define the character of the landscape, although the trail is not built the same way throughout: some sections are cut into the rock, while others feature bridges and stairs.

At the end of Vražji prolaz lies Muževa hišica, a cave about 200 metres long. A lake is located in its rear chamber. Zeleni vir presents a different type of landscape: there, a powerful spring emerges at the bottom of a shallow cave beneath a cliff about 70 metres high. Muževa hišica is a cave with a lake; at Zeleni vir, a powerful spring emerges beneath the cliff.

The waters are also part of the area’s distinctive natural landscape. Among the species found in and around the region’s waters are fire salamanders (Salamandra salamandra) and grass snakes (Natrix natrix). There is also an ornithological observation station in the Zeleni vir protected area. It adds another focus to the experience of the landscape: birdwatching.

Hiking trails and viewpoints

A marked hiking trail leads to Skradski vrh. At the summit, there is a chapel and benches where you can rest; from there, wide views open across southern Gorski kotar and the Kupa Valley. The mountain lodge “Rudetova bajta” is also located on Skradski vrh.

A circular trail with three viewpoints starts at Skrad railway station. Its first viewpoint is Kavranova stijena, and the second is Perić. The circular trail is also part of the Goranska planinarska transverzala. If you plan to follow this route, check current route conditions separately.

Hiking and maintaining mountain and walking trails are among the main activities of the “Skradski vrh” mountaineering association in the Municipality of Skrad. The Hrvatska planinarska obilaznica and the Goranski planinarski put run through its area of activity. The Šiljar botanical educational trail offers a different focus: it introduces visitors to vegetation at higher elevations. Thus, the Municipality of Skrad brings together viewpoints, marked trails and an educational trail with its own distinctive theme.

Technical heritage, churches and raspberries

The “Munjara” hydroelectric power plant is considered a valuable monument to technical heritage and is still in operation. It offers a different way to explore the area’s history than the nature trails: here, the focus is a technical structure that is also considered a monument.

The church in Skrad, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, was built in 1694. It is the oldest church in the Municipality of Skrad and stands above the centre of Skrad. In Divjake, the Church of Saint Isidore was built in 1754. The parish’s history goes back further still: the independent parish of Saint Isidore in Divjake was founded in 1807 and included all the settlements in the area that now belongs to the Municipality of Skrad.

The 17th Raspberry Festival in Skradska draga offers a glimpse of local food culture. The programme for the event on 28 June 2025 included a local produce market featuring raspberries, aronia berries, juices, honey and jams, as well as the presentation and distribution of a 50-metre raspberry strudel. A guided hike to Skradski vrh with licensed guides was also planned. These programme details relate to the 2025 edition.
