Klana between mountain landscapes and trails

The Municipality of Klana can be explored through two themes: trails through forested mountain country and traces of a long cultural history. The terrain and landscape have a distinct high-mountain character, with wooded hills, mountain springs and dense forests shaping the area. When planning, it helps to distinguish hiking options by duration and difficulty: some trails specify both, while the Klana–Kastav hiking trail also has designated stages. This lets you focus your stay more on nature, archaeological sites or sacred buildings.

At least 13 marked and maintained hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty wind through dense forests and quiet meadows to scenic peaks and historic sites. Not every route gives the same information about time or level of difficulty. Check trail conditions and duration before setting out, as conditions can change. Details for individual routes can help you fit hiking time into your daily plans.

Hikes by duration and difficulty

The Klana–Kastav hiking trail starts in the centre of Klana, passes through the village of Škalnica to Breza, and continues there as the Kastav Srna hiking trail. Its stages are listed as taking 1 hour 30 minutes for Klana–Škalnica, 1 hour 15 minutes for Škalnica–Breza, and 2 hours for Breza–Kastav. The final stage is therefore the longest of the three. Near Klana’s last houses, the trail offers a picturesque view of Kvarner Bay.

The easy Studena–Roman Wall trail takes one hour. A marked path leads to the remains of the Roman wall of the Liburnian Limes, dating from the 3rd and 4th centuries and situated at an altitude of 596 metres. By comparison, the Klana–Pliš trail is of moderate difficulty and takes two hours. It follows a forest track to the scenic summit of Pliš at 933 metres. This gives you two options of different lengths and difficulty levels; check the duration and trail conditions before setting out.

The Trstenik valley lies at an altitude of 960 metres and is home to a natural water spring. Its availability may vary depending on the season.

Archaeology and cultural history

The archaeological site of Gradina lies on a rocky hill directly above the centre of Klana. Its highest point is 629 metres above sea level. Sections of the Liburnian Limes lie in the hinterland of Studena and Ravno; sections can be found on Vranjeno Hill and in the Za presikom hollow. Gradina and the Limes sections thus represent different archaeological sites within the area’s cultural offerings.

From 2017, Gradina served as an open-air summer stage for various cultural programmes; individual programmes may vary.

Sacred sites and their dates

The Church of St Michael the Archangel stands on a hill above Klana. It dates from the 17th century and has long been a gathering place for the faithful, especially on Michaelmas, 29 September. The Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, built in 1904, is located on the road between Studena and Klana. On 11 February, local residents gather there for prayer and the Rosary. Details of the annual gatherings may vary. Those interested in sacred sites will find two different buildings here, each with its own dates in the annual calendar.
