The 5 km-long Čavle - C5 Frankopan Trail leads to historical monuments from the Frankopan era; along the way, views open up over the Rječina Gorge, Rijeka and the Kvarner. This makes the trail an engaging introduction to the Municipality of Čavle: here, you can discover cultural history and landscape together.

Grobnik’s history on trails and at historic buildings

Destinations on the Frankopan route include Kaštel Zrinskih i Frankopana, the country house of nobleman Franjo Frankulin, dating from 1660, and the churches of Sv. Filipa i Jakova, Sv. Trojice and Sv. Križa. The church of Sv. Filipa i Jakova in Grobnik has stood there for 900 years and bears witness to early Christianity in the area. The old town of Grobnik is also worth a visit: it is considered the most important cultural landmark of the wider Grobnišćina region and invites you to take a walk through its heritage.

Grobnik Castle is now a gallery and museum, as well as a venue for cultural events. If you plan to attend an event, check the relevant date. Restoration work on the south tower was funded as part of the “Putevima Frankopana” project. This included roof repairs, work on the façade and masonry, floor renovations and carpentry work. In the centre of Čavle, the historic and tourist landmark of Čebuhar House commemorates the respected and industrious Čebuhar family.

Platak, climbing crags and aviation

Platak is a ski resort and also a starting point for hiking trails, promenades, paths and cycling routes. Seasonal operating conditions may vary. The area is also home to the Sušak and Platak mountain lodges: both are open year-round and offer overnight accommodation as well as local gastronomic specialities. Check current operations before your trip.

Those interested in climbing will find climbing areas with distinctive atmospheres and good rock at Kamenjak and Vela Peša. They are suitable for beginners and climbing schools. Check route conditions before climbing.

Experiences with hang gliders, parachutes and aircraft are available at Grobnik Airfield. It is considered one of the few places in Croatia where all branches of aviation can be experienced; check the participation requirements in advance. GROBNIK OPEN DAYS offers a different experience tied to a specific date: passionate drivers can get to know the Automotodrom Grobnik circuit. Check the dates for the relevant year.

Polenta, cheese and community festivals

The Festival of Polenta and Cheese takes place every year in late June, but changes venue: in odd-numbered years it is held in Čavle, and in even-numbered years in Jelenje. Check the date and venue for the relevant year. The festival celebrates Grobnik cheese and potato polenta (“kompirica”), dishes that have sustained generations of Grobnik residents and in whose honour the festival is held. The programme includes the children’s cooking activity Little Polenta (“Mića palenta”) and cheesemaking in a natural setting.

At the end of August, Bartoja brings residents from across the municipality together to celebrate St Bartholomew’s Day. The programme includes religious, cultural, entertainment, sporting and culinary events, and may vary.

Landscape and character

The Municipality of Čavle naturally combines mountain and coastal climates and is rich in flora and fauna. This landscape offers a distinct perspective alongside the municipality’s historic sites, recreational activities and culinary traditions.
