Explore the Municipality of Lokve through three distinct themes: water, karst and culture. Lokvarsko Lake is a reservoir, while Špilja Lokvarka is a protected geomorphological natural monument. Golubinjak Park Forest adds paths and karst features to the nature experience; cultural venues offer a historical exhibition, liqueur tasting and a long-running event.

Lake and cave

Lokvarsko Lake was created as a reservoir in the 1950s. You can swim there in summer, while fishing is possible year-round. This offers a clear distinction when choosing when to visit: swimming is limited to summer, while fishing is possible throughout the year.

Špilja Lokvarka has been protected as a geomorphological natural monument since 1961. Of its six levels, the first four are open to visitors. Check the current access rules before your visit. The part explored to date is 1,179 metres long, and the cave is 275 metres deep overall. Length and depth represent two different measures: the extent of the explored section and the depth of the cave.

Park forest and karst trails

Golubinjak is a protected park forest covering 51 hectares; it was designated in 1955. The 10.82-kilometre “Staza spilja” runs through the park forest. Its paths and trails pass numerous karst features and formations; along the route, you can also visit speleological sites. The trail therefore combines stretches of path with karst formations and first-hand insights into the world of caves.

Guided walks are offered in the park forest and can be arranged in advance by phone or email. Barbecue areas are also available to rent. Confirm their availability in advance on site. Alongside exploring the karst features, you can therefore choose between a guided walk and use of a rentable barbecue area in the park forest.

Other natural features

A distinctive natural feature in the Municipality of Lokve is “Kraljica Šume”, a giant fir tree. Its age is estimated at over 250 years, and it stands 42 metres tall. Its height is given as a measurement, whereas its age is an estimate—two different details that describe the tree’s scale from different perspectives.

Culture and regional products

The Kuća prirode “Kotač” brings together history and local products. Its permanent exhibition explores the history of the Lujzinska cesta. You can also taste local Gorani herbal liqueurs there. Visitors can see the room where the liqueurs are made, as well as the attic where mountain herbs and plants are dried for their production. The tasting can thus be complemented by a look at how the liqueurs are made and dried; the exhibition focuses on a separate historical topic.

The “Muzej žaba” was established in the KC “Picirk” building in Lokve. The traditional “Žabarska noć” has been held in Lokve since 1974. The museum and the event offer different forms of cultural experience: an established museum venue on the one hand and a long-running event on the other.
