The Municipality of Fužine offers a range of ways to explore: trails wind around Lake Bajer and along the shores of Bajer and Lepenica, while Vrelo Cave takes you beneath the surface. There is also a viewpoint, designated places where swimming is permitted, and a weekly market selling produce from family-run farms. If you are looking for accommodation in the Municipality of Fužine, these differences can help you plan your trip around the experiences that interest you.
Trails, water and a cave
A 7 km walking and cycling trail runs around Lake Bajer. The trail by Lakes Bajer and Lepenica is 6.3 km long and completely flat. These trail descriptions answer different questions: the longer route is described as a loop for walkers and cyclists, while the route by both lakes is defined by its length and flat terrain. This lets you compare distance and terrain rather than looking only at the number of kilometres.
The walk to the Preradović viewpoint is another option. This easy walk starts at Beach Bar Čoka by Lake Bajer, is 2.3 km long and takes 45 minutes. From the viewpoint, you can see Lake Bajer, Fužine, Ličko polje and the surrounding mountains. With its stated walking time, this route can also be compared with the longer trails in terms of how long it takes.
Vrelo Cave offers a different kind of experience: it is 300 metres long and rich in stalactites and other cave formations. The cave is step-free and suitable for visitors of all ages, including wheelchair users. Those interested in geology will find a different kind of nature experience here than on the trails around the lakes.
Swimming is permitted at designated spots on Lakes Bajer and Lepenica. SUP boards and kayaks are available to rent at Lagoxperience on Lake Lepenica; check current availability before travelling. Check local seasonal swimming conditions. This gives you the choice between swimming at marked spots and renting equipment for paddling activities.
Every Saturday from 3:00 to 5:00 pm, the Green Market in the centre of Fužine offers local produce from family-run farms. If you plan to visit the market, check the current schedule before your visit. Alongside the trails and nature experiences, the produce adds a distinctive local touch to your outing.
The wider Kvarner Bay destination
Across the wider Kvarner Bay destination, cultural discoveries are part of the picture alongside nature. In Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Putovima Frankopana cultural tourism route includes a total of 17 Frankopan castles and three religious sites. Zrinski Castle in Brod na Kupi houses a permanent exhibition and an interpretation centre about the nature of Gorski kotar and the Frankopan and Zrinski families’ relationship with nature. Opening arrangements may change, so check visitor information in advance.
In other parts of the wider Kvarner Bay destination, nature takes different forms: Golubinjak Forest Park in Lokve is characterised mainly by its forest and rock formations. At Zeleni Vir, an emerald-green lake with crystal-clear, calm water lies inside a cave; its source is at the bottom of the cave. The “Velike zvijeri” Visitor Centre in Stara Sušica focuses on bears, wolves and lynxes and contributes to the development of tourism and the interpretation of Gorski kotar’s natural environment.
