A beach, a mythological trail and medieval streets offer different ways to explore the landscape and history of the Municipality of Mošćenička Draga. At Sipar Beach, you can trace how the shoreline formed; the Trebišća–Perun Trail presents the religious beliefs of the first Slavic settlers in the Kvarner area. Brseč adds a distinctive note with streets and passageways from another era. If you plan your trip around your own interests in discovery, you’ll find natural features, cultural interpretations and built heritage here.

On the coast: formation and beach character

Sipar Beach is several hundred metres long. The Mošćenička Draga stream carried the sand here, while the sea waves shaped the pebbles. At this beach, you can therefore trace not only its length but also how the coastal landform came to be: the watercourse and the surf shaped different elements. The Potok is a flash-flood stream that flows into the sea at Mošćenička Draga. Senjavac has a different beach character: it is a naturist beach behind Sv. Ivan Beach. The coastal features thus differ both in their natural forms and in Senjavac’s explicitly stated type of use.

Trebišća–Perun: trail and mythological interpretation

The historic and mythological Trebišća–Perun Trail presents the religious beliefs of the first Slavic settlers in the Kvarner area. The gorge above Mošćenička Draga is also associated with these beliefs and the ancient cult of Perun. The trail passes through preserved hamlets in the Potoška vala gorge and continues to the 880-metre-high summit of Perun. Its route thus connects specific landscape features with a cultural framework for interpreting them. If you’re interested in mythology, you’ll encounter both the traditional religious beliefs and the names Trebišća and Perun, which give the trail its distinctive thematic focus.

Brseč: streets, oil mill and gallery

In Brseč, streets and passageways retain a medieval character; most of the town’s houses were built in the 17th century. The medieval feel and the construction date of most of the houses describe two different aspects of the place: the character of its streets and a specific period of building. Also dating from the 17th century is an oil mill known as a Toš. It adds a glimpse of local oil production to the built heritage. A birth house now serves as a library and houses the “Eugen K” Gallery, where works by Croatian and international artists are exhibited. There is an impressive view from a rocky cliff beside the small Church of St. Magdalena.

Harbour, diving and a beach in the wider area

Mošćenička Draga has a small harbour used by fishing boats and smaller watercraft. You can explore the coastal area by diving with local diving clubs. The harbour and diving draw attention to different aspects of the water: its use by boats and the underwater world of the coastal area. As a point of interest in the wider region, Uboka Beach lies between Mošćenička Draga and Brseč. It can be reached by boat or on foot via paths from the Rijeka–Pula main road. Its location and the two stated ways of getting there make Uboka a distinct regional addition, rather than a stretch of beach to be considered the same as the places described above.

The wider setting: Kvarner Bay

The wider travel destination of Kvarner Bay also offers regional nature and culture themes that provide a broader context. In Primorje-Gorski Kotar County, the Natura 2000 network comprises 111 sites. It covers nearly 75 percent of the land area and 16 percent of the sea area. The county’s cultural heritage also includes the cultural-tourism route Putovima Frankopana: it features a total of 17 Frankopan castles and three religious sites in the county. These regional examples complement the coastal, landscape and cultural themes of the Municipality of Mošćenička Draga with an explicitly broader perspective on Kvarner Bay.
