The Municipality of Rasinja brings together a layered local history and the transition from the first slopes of Kalnik to the Podravina plain. Three highlights are especially interesting when planning a trip: Dvorac Inkey and other historic landmarks, the landscape around Lake Rasinja, and birdwatching at the fish ponds. Wine-growing and local cuisine add to these themes, though the May Day gathering in 2025 is tied to a specific year.
Landscape and Location
Rasinja lies on the first slopes of the Kalnik foothills, where the Gliboki stream enters the Podravina plain. The town is also halfway between Ludbreg and Koprivnica. These offer two ways to orient yourself: the transition from foothills to plain, and the location between the two towns.
Green meadows, dense forest, and local vineyards shape the shore of Lake Rasinja. The lake was created in 1984 as a reservoir with a dam, in connection with the former Rasinja fish farm. The history of the site is therefore part of the lake’s origins, while the meadows, forest, and vineyards define its landscape setting.
Local History and Monuments
Remains of Old Town Rasinja can be found in the settlement. Dvorac Inkey was built by the Inkey family on the site of an older manor house and the outbuildings of Old Town Rasinja. The former Inkey estate included the castle, park, outbuildings, garden, parish church, and manor cemetery. The castle’s history, the former estate complex, and the settlement remains all add to the story of the area.
Dvorac Inkey is classified as protected cultural heritage under registration number Z-3197. The Column of the Holy Trinity in Cvetkovec is also listed as protected cultural heritage (Z-3261). The Baroque parish church of the Finding of the Holy Cross dates from 1790. Traces of the Templar settlement of Opoja are associated with nearby Budim Hill—another link to local history, this time in the area around the settlement.
Lake, Fish Ponds, and Activities
The Rasinja fish ponds offer opportunities for birdwatching, including white herons and grey herons. Lake Rasinja offers a different focus: its meadows, forests, and vineyards connect the landscape with the history of the former fish farm.
The lake’s regular stocking with freshwater fish is considered a basis for developing sport-fishing tourism. If you are interested, check local access conditions before your trip. Mountain biking around the Municipality of Rasinja includes terrain with elevation changes and routes for different skill levels. Availability and conditions on individual routes may change, so check them before planning your trip.
Wine and May Day
At the May Day gathering in 2025, three local hunting associations prepared wild game paprikaš. Homemade cured meat products were available at local stalls, especially at the Soviljnjak wine-growing association’s stall. The gathering also featured local aperitifs and a wide selection of wines. Wine-growing and winemaking are associated with Rasinja independently of this one event as well. If you plan to travel around May Day, check the event dates for the relevant year.
Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests
Wine-growing and local cuisine offer another theme; however, 2025 is the specific year associated with the May Day gathering.
