When planning a trip to the Municipality of Kalnik, there are several distinct areas of focus: hiking, climbing, cultural history and wine culture. The trails, rock routes and buildings offer different travel experiences.

Hiking, Climbing and Landscape

The hiking trail network on Kalnik covers 205 kilometres. There are also 16 climbing sectors with recorded routes; in total, Kalnik has more than 230 climbing routes of varying difficulty. The 7-zubi route is challenging in places and requires climbing techniques. Anyone considering it should take this level of difficulty into account when planning. Cycling is another option: the Križevci–Kalnik cycling network follows existing roads with light traffic.

The Bilogora and Kalničko gorje Natura 2000 site includes oak-hornbeam and beech forests. The slopes and valleys also feature meadows, wet meadows and agricultural land. Forests and open areas therefore sit side by side, rather than the landscape being shaped by just one type of terrain.

Vratno Gorge lies in the eastern part of Kalnik and was formed by the Kamešnica stream. In Vratno, a camping area is located beside a hunting lodge, a shelter, a bocce court and a bowling alley. The site’s historical significance dates back to an ancient Roman road to Varaždinske Toplice: Vratno was a well-defended point along the road and was first mentioned in 1207 as porta lapidea, meaning “stone gate”.

Fortress, History and Regional Culture

Veliki Kalnik is a ruined fortress in the eastern part of Kalnik, first mentioned in 1264. The oldest section consists of two towers connected by a narrow passage carved into the rock. The complex features Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architectural elements. It also had a chapel; a large Baroque palace was added in the 17th century. This makes it possible to trace architectural development across several eras in one place.

Another cultural site is the Biblijski vrt mira (Biblical Garden of Peace) in Kalnik. It was opened during the Great Jubilee. Its 33 sculptures depict figures from the Old and New Testaments, as well as Croatian saints. A Kalnik legend, in turn, links Bela IV’s refuge in Kalnik with the nickname “plemeniti kalnički šljivari”, meaning “noble Kalnik plum growers”. This story complements the architectural history with a regional tradition.

Wine Route and Travel Focus

The Križevci–Kalnik–Orehovec Wine Route passes through the Municipality of Kalnik. The wine-growing landscape around Križevci and the foothills of Kalnik includes numerous authentic kleti, traditional wine-cellar buildings. Alongside outdoor activities and history, regional wine culture can therefore be another focus of a trip.

When choosing the focus of your trip, it is worth noting the differences between these themes: the hiking trail network, the climbing sectors and the technically challenging 7-zubi route offer different ways to spend time outdoors. Veliki Kalnik, Vratno and the Biblijski vrt mira, on the other hand, introduce different historical and cultural themes. The Wine Route adds a regional perspective to the options.
