The Municipality of Drnje combines a landscape shaped by Gliboki potok and the Drava River with a rich rural cultural heritage. Drnje and Torčec offer different insights into church architecture, everyday history and archaeological finds. The region’s transport history and Lake Šoderica provide further themes to consider when planning your stay.

Gliboki potok, the Drava River and Lake Šoderica

Drnje lies in the lowlands of Podravina, on Gliboki potok, a tributary of the Drava River. The stream flows through Torčec and Drnje and joins the Drava south of the municipality. These waterways give the landscape a clear geographical structure: the Drava runs along the municipality’s northern and northeastern edge, along the state border with Hungary.

Lake Šoderica is also part of the region’s landscape. It lies in the vicinity of Drnje, and tourist and recreational facilities have been established on its shore. If you would like to include the lake in your plans, check the latest information about the available recreational activities in advance.

Churches, monuments and historic buildings in Drnje

Several periods of history can be traced through specific buildings and memorial sites in Drnje. The complex of the rectory and parish church dates from the first half of the 19th century. The parish Church of the Nativity of Mary was built in 1846, following typical plans for churches in the Military Frontier. Together, the complex and this specific construction date show the local history on two different scales.

A surviving Military Frontier building from the 1790s is now used as a community centre. Another building with a very different former function is the salt storehouse dating from 1789, which is now used by the football club. A monument to King Tomislav, erected to mark the thousandth anniversary of the Croatian kingdom, also stands in the centre of Drnje. A monument to Franjo Mraz stands in front of the school.

Written works are also part of this cultural heritage: in 1687, Juraj Ščrbačić compiled the Drnjanska pjesmarica. It is one of the oldest and most significant hymnals in Kajkavian literature. Together, the buildings, monuments and this hymnal offer a perspective on Drnje that extends beyond individual structures.

Rural architecture and archaeology in Torčec

Torčec adds rural architecture and early local history to the picture. It is home to a complex of corn cribs whose spatial arrangement is characteristic of this part of Pannonia. A mill from the early 20th century and a chapel from the first half of the 19th century add buildings with different uses and from different periods.

The Torčec-Cirkvišče archaeological site deserves particular attention. A ritual find dating to around the middle of the 13th century was discovered there: the head of a dog buried in a vessel, a find unique in Croatia. Archaeological excavations confirmed the site’s presumed sacred character. They also provided evidence to help locate the Church of St Stephen the King, mentioned in an inventory of the Diocese of Zagreb from 1334.

Events and transport routes

“Drnjansko Đurđevo” is a traditional event in Drnje. Its 24th edition was held at the event venue. Historically, the event refers to the veneration of Saint George as the old patron saint of the village and parish.

The region’s routes can also be understood through their history. An international road runs from Koprivnica through Drnje and Gola and onwards to Hungary; its importance increased after the international border crossing at Gola opened in 1982. A regional road links Međimurje with Drnje via Đelekovec and Torčec, then continues via Sigetec and Hlebine to Novigrad Podravski, where it joins the Podravina highway.

The Rijeka–Zagreb–Koprivnica–Drnje–Botovo–Zakany–Budapest railway line is also part of the region’s transport history. The section near Drnje opened in 1870. Drnje station was built during the construction of the railway; Botovo station opened later. This historical perspective complements the road connections without combining the different routes into a single excursion.

Plan your stay around your interests

When looking for a holiday rental, you can start by deciding which aspect of the municipality you would like to focus on: the churches and memorial sites in Drnje, the rural architecture and archaeology in Torčec, or the combination of waterways and recreational facilities at Lake Šoderica. The historic transport routes also offer insight into regional development. This provides a suitable theme for your stay without requiring the different places and sights to be combined into a fixed itinerary.
