Koprivnica-Križevci County lies in the Drava basin, between the Hungarian border along the river and the wooded mountains of Kalnik and Bilogora. The river landscape and forested heights give the area a distinctive setting. Add protected landscapes, a layered urban history and festivals that bring historical stories to life. Nature, culture and regional cuisine offer different ways to experience the area on your trip.
Protected landscapes and encounters with nature
One special place in the county is Đurđevački Pijesci. This 19.5-hectare protected area is the last unwooded remnant of the 12-kilometre-long Podravina sand belt. Information boards, signposts, a visitor parking area and an observation platform help you find your way around. The educational trail adds interpretive boards at its stops; some have been adapted for visitors with disabilities. There is also an insect hotel, bicycle parking benches and places to rest. Check the condition of the facilities before your visit.
The protected-area management has held workshops and outdoor environmental education activities at Đurđevački Pijesci; check in advance whether any are currently scheduled. A visitor-management project aimed to enable controlled visits with as little negative impact as possible on protected species. It also sought to develop a trained group of interpreters.
Kalnik is protected as a significant landscape. This designation recognises its geological and geomorphological features, as well as the diversity of its landscapes and plant life. West of Križevci is Župetnica Forest Park, covering 62.33 hectares and designated for recreation and leisure. The two protected areas have different emphases: at Kalnik, the landscape’s natural features take centre stage, while Župetnica is intended for recreation.
Koprivnica: history in the cityscape
Koprivnica’s old town centre has been preserved as a unified cultural and historical monument complex. At the Church of St Nicholas, the history probably reaches back to the foundations of a medieval Franciscan church; it acquired its present form before 1657. The city’s Franciscan history dates back to around 1290. The Baroque monastery beside the Church of St Anthony was built between 1675 and 1685.
The later use of a historic building is also part of the cityscape: the former Baroque town hall now houses the City Museum, whose collections include archaeological and ethnographic holdings. In the historic Lower Town, Zrinski, Jelačić and Florijanski squares connect public spaces and buildings. The architecture ranges from the Baroque to the Secession, and a bicycle monument adds to the ensemble. In Koprivnica, different eras are present not only in individual buildings but also in the context of the city centre.
Festivals that bring historical stories to life
At the Renesansni Festival, Koprivnica’s city walls provide a historical setting for a medieval market. The programme includes traditional crafts and live historical scenes, as well as period foods and drinks such as mead, beer and wine. Dates and programme details vary each year; check in advance what will be on during your trip.
Križevačko Veliko Spravišće takes place in Križevci in mid-June. It stages the reconciliation of the plum growers from Kalnik with the people of Križevci, in a story linked to the event of 1242 at Kalnik. In Đurđevac, Picokijada includes a procession showcasing Podravina customs and an exhibition of traditional cakes. Its central dramatic performance has been recognised as intangible cultural heritage of Croatia. For all the festivals, it is worth checking the dates and programme for your trip.
Regional cuisine and wine
The traditional cuisine of Podravina and Prigorje reflects Austrian and Hungarian influences. Its specialities include meat dishes, river fish and cured meats. A special holiday tradition is Bregofska pita: this Christmas pie has been baked in Bregi for more than two hundred years and was declared intangible cultural heritage of Croatia in 2012.
The county encompasses two wine-growing areas: Koprivnica–Đurđevac and Kalnik. They include the Đurđevac and Križevci–Kalnik wine routes. Visits to individual winegrowers or wineries can be arranged by appointment and include the hospitality of local hosts. The specific options vary from one business to another, so arrange your visit in advance.
By bike and on the water
Leisure activities in the county include cycling routes, Drava Adventure, Podravina Adventure, rafting and canoeing on the Drava, as well as Bike&Boat Podravina. Along the European Amazon Route in Podravina, cycling infrastructure includes signposts, information boards and rest areas. If you are planning a cycling trip, check route conditions before setting off. Availability of the activities mentioned may also vary by provider; it is best to confirm specific dates directly in advance.
