Shiqi, a district of Zhongshan, brings together historic park sites, comic exhibitions and parks with a range of different features. For travelers, this offers a choice between city history, visual culture and events.

Park history from two perspectives

Yueshan Park is located among the old streets of Shiqi. Local residents funded its creation in 1934; in Zhongshan, it is classified as an important cultural heritage site in the category “important historical site and representative building of modern times.” In the renovation completed in 2025, an opened section of the wall created a viewing corridor from the street to an old pavilion and the former site of the city wall. This brings a pavilion and the former position of the city wall into the same field of view; the park makes its layers of history visible through specific landmarks.

Zhongshan Park tells a different story: it was established in 1946 with funds raised by overseas Chinese and named in honor of Sun Yat-sen. Compared with Yueshan Park, the focus here is on funding by the overseas Chinese community and the park’s dedication; at Yueshan Park, its classification and the renovation completed in 2025 are defining features.

Lakes, tea and comics at Yixian Lake Park

Yixian Lake Park comprises four interconnected lakes; visitors can take a break and drink tea at its pavilion tea terrace. The Zhongshan Comics Gallery is also located in the park. Its exhibition areas are devoted to the history of comics and the works of comic artists from Zhongshan. This brings two perspectives together: the history of the medium and a regional perspective through works by comic artists from Zhongshan. The tea terrace is a separate feature of the park, so the lakes, tea break and exhibition can appeal to different interests.

Sports, fitness and play

Shiqi Cultural Park has five functional areas, including sports facilities, a fitness area and a children’s play area. Its focus differs from that of Yixian Lake Park: the latter features lakes, a tea terrace and a themed gallery, while Shiqi Cultural Park has designated areas for sports, fitness and play. This is useful when choosing parks: the features described range from a tea break and an exhibition to sports and play.

Dragon boat races on the Qijiang River

In recent years, major dragon boat races have been held annually in Shiqi District along the Dongming section of the Qijiang River. This adds an event to the park history and exhibitions that may influence when to travel.
