Islands, Coast and Nature
On Wailingding, striking peaks and rocks, along with landscapes shaped by marine erosion, define the scenery. Lingding Peak on the island offers views of the South China Sea. Dong'ao offers a different appeal: the island is known for its fine beaches, clear water and dense, primeval forest. Activities described there include walks along a forest boardwalk and cycling around the island on its ring road. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and banana boat rides are also available at Nansha Bay; availability may vary by season. Check current route conditions and offerings before planning your visit.
Qi'ao is also associated with nature: it is home to a provincial-level mangrove wetland park and a national reserve for Chinese white dolphins. These protected areas add another perspective on the region alongside its islands and coastal landscapes.
Cultural Heritage on Qi'ao and in Historic Towns
On Qi'ao Island, the old fort ruins are located on Baishi Street. The Tianhou Temple and the exhibition hall in the former residence of Su Zhaozheng are also among the island’s historic attractions. In June 2016, the Qi'ao Village History Museum and an intangible cultural heritage transmission base opened in the Zhong Clan Ancestral Hall. Check current visiting conditions before you go.
A distinctive cultural highlight is the Qi'ao Duanwu blessing procession, a local custom held around the Dragon Boat Festival and during the four days leading up to it. It includes communal rituals, visits between households, celebrations and processions by village residents. The procession was added to the municipal list of representative intangible cultural heritage elements in 2013 and the provincial list in 2015; Zhong Jinping is named as a representative bearer of the tradition. Qi'ao silver shrimp paste is also included on the municipal list of such cultural heritage elements.
Tangjia is designated a National Historical and Cultural Town of China. Its old town features historic buildings such as the Ruizhi Ancestral Hall, the Wangci Building and the three temples of Tangjia. Cultural institutions include the Tangjia Village History Museum and the Wuyong Centre for the Transmission of Traditional Hand Weaving. In the old village of Huitong, founded in 1732, numerous Lingnan-style modern-era buildings and traces of cultural exchange between China and the West have been preserved. The village history museum is housed in the restored grand ancestral hall of the Mo family and presents Huitong’s changes over a century. A small film museum in the renovated Tiaomei Ancestral Hall offers insights into Chinese and international film history.
Leisure Attractions and Regional Routes
Chimelong Ocean Kingdom is located in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin and officially opened on March 29, 2014. The attraction has eight themed areas and brings together rare marine animals, rides and large-scale stage shows. Experiences involving swimming with dolphins and feeding manatees are also described at Ocean Kingdom. Check in advance whether these activities are available during your visit.
The first edition of the “Zhuhai Origins” cultural route launched on Qi'ao on March 24, 2026. It ran from the former residence of Su Zhaozheng and Baishi Street via the Wangchiling Trail to the core area of the Houshawan archaeological site. For planning, it is worth checking the current program and visitor options. Ferries from Hengqin Passenger Terminal serve the islands of Wailingding, Wanshan, Dong'ao and Guishan. Check the schedule before travelling, as routes may change.
