Zhaoqing can be explored through several distinct cultural themes: the rock inscriptions of the Seven Star Crags, the architectural history of Meian, the commemoration of the Ye Ting Independent Regiment and the Duanyan inkstone-making tradition. When planning your stay, you can first consider whether you are more interested in inscriptions and poetry, historic buildings, commemorative culture or a locally made cultural product. These themes offer different ways to explore the destination’s history and culture.
Rock Inscriptions and Poetry at the Seven Star Crags
The Seven Star Crags are in Duanzhou District, Zhaoqing, and are a national 5A-rated tourist attraction. Their group of rock inscriptions comprises 531 inscriptions. It is considered the largest and most completely preserved group of its kind in Lingnan, as well as a thousand-year-old corridor of poetry. It is also a major site of national cultural heritage. In this way, tangible records and cultural interpretation sit side by side: the number indicates the scale of the group, while the image of a corridor of poetry highlights its literary significance. If you are interested in inscriptions, this is a clearly defined collection with a far-reaching poetic interpretation.
Meian: Architectural History and Preserved Structure
Meian offers a different focus. It was founded in 996 and designated a major site of national cultural heritage in 1996. The main hall retains structural elements from the Song dynasty. Its timber construction has features considered unique in Guangdong. Meian’s history can thus be explored both through its founding and through its preserved structure. For visitors choosing based on architectural interest, this combination of a dated history and surviving construction is particularly distinctive.
The Ye Ting Regiment and Yuejiang Tower
At Yuejiang Tower, the history of the Ye Ting Independent Regiment is linked to a specific place: the regiment was founded in front of the tower on November 21, 1925. Its headquarters were in the tower, and the grounds in front were used, among other things, as a training ground. Yuejiang Tower houses the Zhaoqing Museum and the memorial at the former headquarters. There are two permanent exhibitions there: “The Iron Spirit of the Army – History of the Ye Ting Independent Regiment” and an exhibition reconstructing scenes from the regiment’s history. The exhibition titles highlight different aspects: one focuses on the regiment’s history, while the other reconstructs scenes from it. Together, the founding story, the site’s former use and the commemoration of the regiment complement one another.
Duanyan and Bao Gong Cultural Park
Duanyan adds a craft perspective. The inkstone is made in Zhaoqing and is regarded as the foremost of China’s four famous inkstones. This is a different cultural theme from Meian’s preserved architecture or the military-history commemoration at Yuejiang Tower. As a cultural project, Bao Gong Cultural Park brings together education about combating corruption, history and culture, and sightseeing. The focuses are therefore clearly distinct: Duanyan centres on a locally made cultural product, while Bao Gong Cultural Park combines education, history and sightseeing.
A Practical Note on Route Planning
The official Xinghu Scenic Area portal lists a sightseeing route around the lake using electric carts and bicycles. If you take this information into account when planning, check the current operating hours and the availability of the listed transport options in advance. This keeps the route as a practical option that you can assess based on your visit date.
