Welland brings together several travel interests: canal history, local culture, water sports and green spaces. During your stay, you can focus on culture or turn your attention more towards activities on the water and opportunities to relax. The different places and offerings give you concrete starting points for planning your own trip.

Canal History and Historic Memorial Sites

The Battle of Cook's Mills National Historic Site in Welland was the scene of a battle between British and Canadian troops and American forces during the War of 1812. A later chapter in the canal’s history is associated with Bridge 13, also called Main Street Bridge. The bridge was built between 1927 and 1930 during construction of the fourth Welland Canal, which took place from 1913 to 1933. Its towers are set at an angle to both the waterway and the adjoining roads—an architectural feature that makes the bridge distinctive.

The Welland Canal Memorial Monument commemorates the people from Canada and around the world who came to the Niagara Peninsula to build the canal. The Welland Crowland War Memorial is the last major First World War monument erected in Canada. Together with the 1812 battle, these sites bring the construction of the canal and commemorations of different historical events into focus.

Museum and Canal Terrace

You can set aside an approximate time window for a museum visit: a typical visit to the Welland Museum takes about 90 minutes and includes galleries on two floors. This duration is a guide, not a fixed requirement for your visit.

Canal Terrace in downtown Welland combines water features, gardens and benches with historic interpretive panels about the canal and the city’s shipping industry. It offers a different focus from the museum galleries: here, the panels are part of a setting with gardens and seating.

The Welland Farmers Market on Saturdays

Since 1907, locals and tourists have visited the Welland Farmers Market every Saturday. Product categories include fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, artisanal cheese and baked goods. The specific selection may vary by vendor. If the market is part of your stay, Saturday is the relevant day of the week; the product categories are an overview, not a guarantee of what every individual vendor will offer.

Water Sports: Training Facility and Seasonal Offerings

The Welland International Flatwater Centre combines international-level competitive water sports facilities with recreational and social offerings. The centre is set on 411 acres of parkland and 272 acres of water. Its facilities include an indoor training pool for rowing, canoeing, kayaking and dragon boating. Since the facility’s configuration may change, check the current status in advance if you are interested in a specific sport.

At Rec Rentals @ the Docks, visitors can use canoes, kayaks, paddleboats and pedal boats, as well as SUP equipment. The city does not provide supervised swimming areas along the recreational waterway; swimming there is at your own risk. Operations are seasonal and may change. If this offering is important to your plans, check in advance whether it will be available on your dates. This brings two different aspects of water sports into focus: training opportunities in the indoor pool and seasonal use of various watercraft.

Trails, Green Spaces and Events

Merritt Island is located downtown and has paved and natural trails, a play area, public washrooms, benches, picnic tables and ample parking. Welland’s paved and unpaved trails offer locals and visitors opportunities for recreation and getting around. Along the Welland Canal Parkway Trail, signs guide cyclists and keep them on the bike path.

Merritt Park and Amphitheatre features a 750-seat amphitheatre set naturally into the shoreline, hosting local music and theatre events. This gives you a choice between trails and parks on one hand and a venue for music and theatre on the other as distinct recreation options.

Two details serve different purposes when planning your schedule: about 90 minutes is a guide for a typical museum visit, while Saturday identifies the recurring market day. You can use visit duration and day of the week as separate reference points for your stay.
