Wainfleet offers several distinct reasons to visit: historic insights at Marshville Heritage Village, recurring events and attractions related to the Wainfleet Wetlands. When planning your trip, first decide whether you want to schedule your travel dates around a festival or whether you are mainly interested in buildings, historic vehicles or nature activities.

Marshville and Local History

Marshville Heritage Village preserves historic buildings and gives visitors an opportunity to learn about and experience the past. The Marshville Heritage Festival features historical demonstrations in and around a restored 19th-century Wainfleet settlement, then known as Marshville. The festival was introduced in 1989. The settlement and demonstrations give the festival a historical connection, while the Village has its own focus on preserving buildings and sharing knowledge.

Another specific glimpse into local history can be found at Dean Garage. In the summer of 1995, it was transferred to the Marshville Heritage Society and added to Marshville Heritage Village. Dean Garage displays a 1913 McLaughlin and a 1928 Rugby tow truck. These two vehicles complement the historic buildings with individual exhibits, each identified by year. The historical theme therefore ranges from the restored settlement to specific vehicles.

Festivals with Different Focuses

The Marshville Heritage Festival takes place every year on Labour Day weekend at Heritage Village in Wainfleet. If you want to schedule your trip around this festival, check the current event dates in advance. The recurring weekend information does not provide a specific date for planning your trip.

Another annual event is the Wainfleet Fall Fair. It takes place on the third weekend of September at the grounds in Wainfleet Village. The fair offers a full weekend of festivities with competitions for young and old alike. This gives it a different focus from the historical demonstrations at the Marshville Heritage Festival. The timing also differs: the festival is held on Labour Day weekend, while the Fall Fair takes place on the third weekend of September. Check the current dates for the Fall Fair as well before planning your trip.

Nature in the Wainfleet Wetlands

The Wainfleet Wetlands feature the GeoHike, developed by the Association of Professional Geoscientists of Ontario (PGO). Passive recreational activities such as walking, birdwatching and nature photography are also offered there. The GeoHike is a named offering of its own; the other three activities are categorized as passive recreational pursuits. This gives you different ways to enjoy nature, depending on whether you are more interested in the GeoHike or in observing wildlife, photography and walking. Check the applicable conditions before visiting.

When planning your stay, you can distinguish between two types of reasons to visit: the festivals provide recurring weekend time frames, and their current dates must fit your trip. The historic buildings, vehicles and wetlands offer different points of interest. If a festival is the main reason for your trip, plan around its confirmed date first.
